3 Vision MVC is an environmental leader in our communities - teaching, learning, and supporting sustainability. Mission Through mindful education and action, we advocate the wise use of natural, financial and human resources to students, community members, MVC leadership, and employees. We seek and act upon opportunities within our circles of influence to advance DCCCD and its communities on the journey toward global sustainability. We encourage everyone to take action in their personal lives to adopt a sustainable lifestyle.

4 AASHE (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education) American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS)

5 STARS is designed to: Provide a guide for advancing sustainability in all sectors of higher education. Enable meaningful comparisons over time and across institutions by establishing a common standard of measurement for sustainability in higher education. Create incentives for continual improvement toward sustainability. Facilitate information sharing about higher education sustainability practices and performance. Build a stronger, more diverse campus sustainability community.

6 Pilot Project More than 90 colleges and universities are testing STARS during the pilot period. Over the course of 2008 they will provide feedback to AASHE and will help inform future versions of STARS. Mountain View College is one of them.90 colleges and universities

7 Planning Requirements for AASHE Strategic Plan Master Plan Sustainability Plan Climate Plan

8 Current Strategic Plan GOAL I – Student Success –Objective E: “Our student’s success will be systematically made possible with comprehensive student support services, and their learning experiences will be complimented by relevant co- curricular activities”. (i.e.: The Green committee provides educational workshops monthly, Green tips and hints through out the building, interactive Green Day activities). GOAL IV – Community Development and Partnerships –Objective A: “Partnerships create, expand, and/or strengthen partnerships with civic, community, and educational organizations to improve the quality of life in our communities. Includes the basic principles of sustainability and the college’s responsibility for staff, student, and community education through co-curricular activities as stated in:

9 Suggest Additional Measures Goal I Objective E –6. Annual number of sustainability educational activities and participation –Ex. Workshops, guest speakers, community activities –7. Ask faculty to identify objectives and activities related to sustainability. –Ex. Biology, Ecology, Human Development, Science Fairs, Recycling Projects, etc.

10 Additional Suggested Measures Goal IV Objective A: partnerships –Edit # 3 to include MVC students participating in community service sustainability projects.
