2 HAPPY WEDNESDAY Bellwork: Write down only the bolded red portion and your answer. Two species of mice live in a field in the middle of East Texas. One mouse species is WHITE with BLACK spotting. The other is BROWN with WHITE spotting. After a year, the population of white mice has dramatically decreased, while the population of the brown mice has slightly increased. Why would this be happening?

13 Fitness: the ability of an organism to survive and reproduce; results from adaptations

14 Adaptation: inherited characteristic that increases an organism’s chance of survival

15 Successful adaptations will: - make organisms better suited to their environment - increase fitness Humans have thousands of adaptations: large brain, opposable thumbs, excellent sensory organs, light, strong skeleton, etc.

16 What is the primary mechanism of evolution?

17 Natural selection: individuals with characteristics not well suited to their environment will either die or leave few offspring * Also called “survival of the fittest” * Observed as changes in a population over time, NOT individual organisms!

18 1. A population of giraffes inhabits an area filled with tall trees and vegetation that is located high off of the ground. Within the population of giraffes are individuals with short, medium, and long necks. Which of the individuals will leave behind the most offspring? Long necks – they will be able to reach the food better than the others, and will therefore survive longer & leave more offspring

19 2. Complete the following sentence with the correct answer choice. Natural selection happens (quickly/slowly) and occurs in (individuals/populations).

20 3. A brand of fire ant poison claims to kill all ants in two applications. The first application of the poison killed 74% of the fire ants. Three months later, the poison was reapplied but only killed 39% of the remaining fire ant population. Explain the decrease in the effectiveness of the ant poison. The remaining ants were resistant to the poison. What genes will these remaining ants pass to their offspring?

21 4. Imagine that a small island holds a population of lizards that are all the same (have the same traits). Now imagine a strong storm sweeps some of the island lizards over to the mainland. On the mainland, there are new ecosystems for the island lizards to explore. In these new ecosystems, they meet new populations of lizards (with new traits) that they can now breed with. What might happen with regards to the variation that could be created within the population of island lizards? (more change, less change, no change)

22 5. In Madagascar scientists have discovered a moth, Xanthopan morganii praedicta, which has a 30.5 cm long proboscis and feeds from and pollinates Darwin’s orchid, Angraecum sesquipedale. The orchid has a nectar-producing tube that is 27.9 cm long. How is the moth’s proboscis size an adaptation for its environment? The moth has very little competition for its food.
