2 The 4 C’s Determine Diamond Grade and Value  Cut  Refers to a diamond’s reflective qualities, not shape  Angles and number of facets determine how diamond reflects light  In well-cut diamonds, light from the top, reflects from one side to the other, and out the top.  In poorly cut diamonds, light from the top and “leaks” out the bottom.  Clarity  Refers to a diamond’s flaws  Air bubbles  Cracks  Diamonds range from Ugly to included 3(Flaw seen by your eyes  Color  Refers to the color  No color more valuable  Graded from d to z  Fancy colors don’t follow those rules

3 4 C’s Cont.  Carat  Refers to the unit of weight by which a diamond is measured  The greater the weight the more expensive the diamonds (all other characteristics being equal)

4 Determining a Diamond’s Quality  Microscope/Loop  A Jeweler’s loop shows inclusions a diamond.  Diamond Tester  Uses light to see if diamond’s real  Don’t guarantee stone, just authenticity  Certification  Certifies the diamond  Certificates come from a source and cost $200

5 Buyer Beware of “Treated” Diamonds and Caring for Diamonds  Filled with glass  Heated for color  Turns yellow then fancy, color may change overtime  Painted for color  Wears off  Easily detectable After getting the diamond, care for it so it doesn’t get scratched or damaged. Diamonds can crack, They should be stored and not touching anything. Finally, use a jewelers polishing cloth to clean it.
