Complex Cognitive Processes EDP 3004-Chapter 8
2
Metacognition –Awareness of your own cognitive machinery and how it works –Involves three kinds of knowledge: Declarative Procedural Self regulatory (conditional) –Is used to regulate learning –There are developmental differences –Involves three kinds of skills: Planning Monitoring Evaluating Reflections in teaching
3
Learning Strategies –“Is learning how to learn” steps: Cognitively engaged Invest effort (think) Regulate Monitor –Learning Strategies and Tactics are ideas for accomplishing learning goals: General and specific strategies Know when to use them (conditional) Develop a desire to employ these skills Have prior knowledge or schemas Decide what is important Summaries Underlining and highlighting Taking notes Imagery Self questionning Self instruction/questionning PRACTICE
4
Problem Soving find steps to reach some goal: –Identify if the problem is solvable –Define the goals and represent the problem: Focusing attention to the relevant characteristics of the problem Understanding the words Understanding the whole problem Translation and schema training prior knowledge –Exploring Possible Solutions = routes to take
5
1.Algorithms = step by step prescription to achieve a goal 2.Heuristic = general strategy that might lead to the right answer: * Means – ends analysis - problem divided into subgoals and then solving each subgoal * Distance reduction – steps in pursuing a path that moves directly to the final goal * Working backward – begin at the goal and move back to the unsolved problem * Analogical thinking – search solution to a situation that have something in common to the problem at hand
