Andria, Savvas, Victoria, Michael Towns The capital of Cyprus is Nicosia (Lefkosia). It is the only divided capital left in Europe. Nicosia Limassol Keryneia Famagusta Larnaca Paphos Limassol (Lemesos) is the second largest town in Cyprus. It is the main port of the island. Paphos and Larnaca are two other towns of Cyprus. There is one big airport in Larnaca and a smaller one in Paphos. Famagusta (Ammochostos) and Keryneia are in the occupied part of Cyprus. No one lives now in Ammochostos. It is like a ghost city.

Cypriots Most people in Cyprus (650 000) are Greek-Cypriots. These are mostly Greek Orthodox and speak Greek using a Cypriot dialect. Then there are Turkish- Cypriots (70 000) who speak Turkish and are Muslims. Other nationalities are found on the island too. Cypriots are known to be friendly people and hospitable to strangers. Modestia, Rafaella, Stefanos, Michael

Land Rafaella, Theodoros, Stelios, Myria Troodos mountain (1950m) One of the many damps in Cyprus. Many nice sandy beaches

Climate The weather in Cyprus is mild and the climate is Mediterranean. It is very hot in summer and we usually go swimming from May to September. It is not very cold and it doesn’t rain a lot in winter so we have a problem with the water supply. Thus we built a lot of damps so we collect water. Tatiana, George, Eftychios, Despoina

Nature Marina, Trifonas, George, Andri There is a great variety of flora and fauna in Cyprus. Some of them are endemic, which means they can be found only here. Cyprus moufflon (called Agrino) is a kind of wild goat you can find only in Cyprus and it is the largest wild animal that still lives on the island. This animal is used as the symbol of Cyprus Airways.

Economy Cyprus currency is Cyprus Pound (CYP £). But from 2008 we will use Euro €. Our economy is based mostly on tourism. There are a lot of tourists in Cyprus every year. Most of them come from England, Greece and Scandinavia. They like our nice beaches. The tourists also go for sightseeing all over the island. There are many ancient or historical places to visit in Cyprus. The tourists also like to take part in some of the festivities going on on the island. Anna, Angelos, Elina, Stella

History Cyprus has a history of 10 000 years! By 1050 BC Cyprus can be considered a Greek island with the language, culture and religion of Greece well established. From 750 BC Cyprus is conquered by Assyria, Egypt and Persia. Cyprus became part in succession of the Hellenist empire, the Roman empire, and the Byzantium. Before Cyprus became part of the Ottoman Empire, the control of the island changed hands many times (The Knights Templar, Guy de Lusignan and the Venetians). In 1878 Britain took administration of Cyprus and in 1925 AD the island became a British Colony. In 1960 AD Cyprus was granted independence. In 1974 AD Turkey invaded Cyprus and still continues to illegally occupy 37% of the island. In 2004 Cyprus became part of E.U. Despoina, Yiannis, Vanessa, Christina
