The year is 1587, Roanoke Island in what is modern day North Carolina. Over 100 men, women and children have traveled across the Atlantic to try and settle in the New World. After a few short months, supplies had run low and a trip back to England was necessary to get more. So John White returned to England but was unable to make it back to the New World for three whole years. He couldn't believe what he found when he returned…..the entire colony there at Roanoke Island had disappeared. What could have possibly happened to them????

Today you will be researching several different theories about what happened to the Lost Colony. You will first choose a partner and your jobs will be to read about the colony and then read at least five different theories that try and explain what happened to the colonists. Your job will be to create a digital story about the Lost Colony using the theories you researched and explain which is the most believable compared to the other ones you came across and why your theory is the best.

1. You'll first choose a partner to work with 2.You will have some articles and a video that you will need to watch and view for your background knowledge. 3.As you read the information on the Roanoke Island colony, each of you will need to answer questions on the Background information form Links Background informationBackground information form Timeline of eventsVideo of Lost Colony Go to the next slide

1.Once you've read the introductory articles, watched the video and finished the Background information form, you'll then begin to review the different theories about what happened to the colonists. 2.Use the following links to research; split them up between the two of you and use the worksheet to help you organize your opinions on the theories. Worksheet Article and websites with theories of what happened How Stuff WorksHow Stuff Works Fox News articleFox News article TheoriesTheories Lost Colony Fact of FictionLost Colony Fact of Fiction Science Daily article Science Daily article National Geographic ArticleNational Geographic Article Go to Next Slide

 Once you’ve finished your research, your final task will be for the two of you to create a digital story retelling the Lost Colony and explaining which theory you think is actually what happened to the colonists and explaining which could not have happened as well. Below are three different websites you can use to create your story along with a video that shows you how to use each website. I have shown you what all three of these sites look like, and I will help show everyone how to create an account for the site that they want to use.  Voicethread (how to use) Voicethreadhow to use  Zooburst (how to use) Zoobursthow to use  Story Bird (how to use) Story Bird how to use

CATEGORY4321 Telling the storyEstablishes a story of the Lost Colony early on and maintains a clear focus throughout. Establishes a story of the Lost Colony early on and maintains focus for most of the presentation. There are a few lapses in focus, but the story of the Lost Colony is fairly clear. It is difficult to figure out the story of the Lost Colony of the presentation. What Happened to the Lost Colony Explains what possibly happened to the Lost Colony and disproves other theories. Explains what possibly happened to the Lost Colony and disproves only one other theory. Explains what possibly happened to the Lost Colony but does not disprove other theories. Neither explains what possibly happened to the Lost Colony or disproves other theories. ImagesImages create a distinct atmosphere or tone that matches different parts of the story. The images may communicate symbolism and/or metaphors. Images create an atmosphere or tone that matches some parts of the story. The images may communicate symbolism and/or metaphors. An attempt was made to use images to create an atmosphere/tone but it needed more work. Image choice is logical. Little or no attempt to use images to create an appropriate atmosphere/tone. GrammarGrammar and usage were correct (for the dialect chosen) and contributed to clarity, style and character development. Grammar and usage were typically correct (for the dialect chosen) and errors did not detract from the story. Grammar and usage were typically correct but errors detracted from story. Repeated errors in grammar and usage distracted greatly from the story.

 As you’ve discovered, the story of the Lost Colony remains a mystery today over 400 years later. But hopefully you and your partner have been able to get a better idea of what could have possibly happened and can explain what is a possible explanation and what is just fiction. Perhaps some day, we will discover concrete evidence as to what happened to these 117 people.  And the Lost Colony is not the only unsolved mystery in our history.
