Non-living things in an ecosystem E.g. water, soil, oxygen, light, etc. Biotic factor Living things in an ecosystem E.g. animals, plants, fungi, microorganisms, etc.

9 Definitions Carnivore Consumer / Heterotroph
Animals that consume only meat E.g. wolf, tuna, lion, fox, etc. Consumer / Heterotroph Organisms that must eat to obtain energy E.g. animals

10 Definitions Decomposer Detritivore
Release enzymes to break down dead plant/ animals to return nutrients to the ecosystem E.g. fungi, bacteria, etc. Detritivore Feed on dead plant/animal matter to return essential nutrients to the ecosystem E.g. crabs, worms, some insects, etc.

11 Definitions Herbivore Producer / Autotroph
Animals that consume only plants E.g. cows, deer, rabbits, moose, etc. Producer / Autotroph Organisms that must produce their own energy E.g. plants

12 Definitions Omnivore Scavenger
Animals that consume both plants and animals E.g. chicken, bear, skunks, birds, etc. Scavenger Animals that consume carrion (dead animal meat) E.g. vultures, eagles, crows, hyenas, etc.
