To understand how Darwin developed his theory of evolution I can: Level E: state Darwin’s Theory of Evolution Level D: state Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and describe two observations that lead to his theory Level C: explain Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and apply it to classification of species

“Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science”

Conducted research throughout the world (most specifically in the Galapagos islands off the coast of Ecuador) After looking at the similarities and differences between various animals around the world he developed a theory on the origin of species Wrote a book called ‘On the Origin of Species’

Evidence for Evolution Fossil Record Variations within and between current species Looked at how fossils developed and changed over time

Main Idea: Gradual changes in species due to genetic variation leads to the development of new species via Natural Selection i.e. All species come from the same ancestor species – Including humans

TASK: Use the internet to fill in the glossary like the one posted on the board Once you have filled out the glossary...

Evolution? The book ends with the following statement: “There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.”
