Angela Caridi Bethany Barry Bryce Thompson Carly Orduz 6 TH GRADE SCIENCE

Goals – Students will learn… Formation Structure Land Formation Locations Impact UNIT: VOLCANOES

Teacher lecture – Use Prezi – World map background – Points on formation in hotspot area – Students take notes in science journals LESSON 1: HOW VOLCANOES FORM

Go to computer lab Put students in groups of 3 – Assign each group section of volcano – Group must find important facts on their section – Put facts on PowerPoint slide No more than 6 words per fact Save all slides on single flash drive – Use action button feature on PowerPoint – Make interactive volcano diagram Post to class site so students can study at home LESSON 2: STRUCTURE OF VOLCANOES

Short lecture on where most volcanoes are Students then get iPads – Online map of hotspot areas – http://www.mapsofworld.com/major-volcanoes.htm http://www.mapsofworld.com/major-volcanoes.htm – Interactive Kahoot quiz LESSON 3: LOCATION OF VOLCANOES

Students get iPads – Have them research volcanic eruptions – http://www.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=3754105 http://www.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=3754105 – Students will make ToonDoo Must have 3 facts Will turn it in as saved file on class site LESSON 4: HOW ERUPTIONS HAPPEN

Post ThingLink to class site – Let students explore links and articles on iPads – Include video on power of volcanoes – Must write 2 paragraph summary on paper on what they learned LESSON 5: EFFECTS OF VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS

Pull up volcano diagram PowerPoint on SMART Board – Play quiz game – Students get point for naming parts of volcano – Also get points for describing effects of volcano Click on action buttons to reveal answers REVIEW DAY

VOLCANO DIAGRAM

Main source of magma Volcanoes can move away – No longer over magma chamber – They become dormant Click here to return to diagram: MAGMA CHAMBER

Main path for magma to surface Cone develops around this Magma becomes lava at surface Click here to return to diagram: MAIN VENT

Large opening of volcano Formed by previous eruptions Click here to return to diagram: CRATER

3-5 miles thick under oceans 25 miles thick under continents Separated into tectonic plates Click here to return to diagram: CRUST

Causes air to become hazy Settles over large areas Can form new layers on volcanoes Click here to return to diagram: ASH CLOUD

Students will have test following Tuesday They will be given diagram of volcano – Must label – Include 1 fact about each part Test will also include questions on other lessons – Free response for effects, formation and locations ASSESSMENT

A research website may need to be provided Students may gather wrong facts – Their slide cannot be used – Discouraging Staying on task in computer lab may be difficult PowerPoint may be too boring to students POSSIBLE PITFALLS AND POTHOLES

Students do research themselves Students will gain… – Basic PowerPoint skills – Access to interactive study tool at home Teacher spends less time lecturing Students can learn at their own pace WHY IT IS A GOOD USE OF TECHNOLOGY

THANK YOU
