You must select a public service role from the options below, then you are required to describe the skills and qualities required to perform the role. You should describe what the skills / qualities are and detail why it is important to the role you have selected. Public Service Roles Uniformed - i.e. firefighter, police officer, soldier, prison officer, paramedic Non-uniformed – i.e. teacher, nurse, administrator, receptionist, call handler, housing officer, social worker

The IMPORTANCE of SKILLS: Watch the clips of the skills required by a Police Officer – why are these skills needed? Choose a public services role and explain why each of the required skills are important and why – give an example On your skills and qualities table you need to explain WHY they are important to the two roles you have chosen.

Teamwork Teamwork is where employees work together with-in the organisation. They share ideas and practice. Cooperation This is someone's willingness to work together, this can be with colleagues, members of the pubic or other services. Communication This is passing on information, this can be oral or written communication. Problem solving You will need to be able to come up with solutions to over come the issues / problems. Achieving Aims This the ability to secure / reach a target, this can be personal targets, group targets and organisational targets. i.e. an aim of the RAF on a day mission might be to gather intelligence from locals in towns and villages in Afghanistan. Working with Others This is someone's ability to work with team members and members of the public.

Interpersonal Skills Interpersonal skills are workers ability to work and communicate with others so it will make a good team and work effectively and it mean good service efficiency. Non-verbal communication This is passing on information without oral communication. It can be through reading body language, signs, symbols etc. Organisational skills This is someone's ability to plan and manage themselves and maybe others to achieve an outcome. Using ICT Staff members also need to be able to use a computer to gather accurate information i.e. customer numbers and other customer requirements.

Honesty This means to be truthful and sincere. Integrity This means to be of a sound character. It is someone's willingness to be follow moral and ethical principles and to be honest. Reliability Reliability is being able too trust someone when it is needed. Punctuality This is the ability to be punctual. To strictly observe time and to not be late. To arrive on time, often without prompt. Commitment This means dedication to the cause. It is showing a pledge to a service, organisation or a course of action. Positive attitude to work This means having a good manner, disposition, feeling or position towards your role. Concern for others This means looking out for other people and showing that they are relevant / important.
