Modes of Documentary

What makes a Documentary? A documentary should meet the following criteria- The events being filmed must not be staged, the events must exist above and beyond the activity of filming them. The world depicted in the documentary is real, not imaginary. The documentary filmmaker simply observes and makes an objective record of actual events.

Codes & Conventions What do you think a documentary should look like?

Codes & Conventions Hand held camera Real people Testimony Narration

Modes of Documentary Expository: direct address, social issues presented in a direct form, audience acknowledgement sometimes with a ‘voice of god’ narration and/or ‘talking heads’ Observational : fly on the wall, developed with hand held cameras, and long takes. Audience not aware of the filmmaker; an attempt to capture reality as it unfolds. Participatory : Film maker interviews and interacts with participants. Performative : Represents reality in a stylised way that evokes the mood of fiction film to encourage audience engagement. May involve reconstructions. Mockumentary : is a type of film or television show in which fictional events are presented in documentary style to create a parody. These productions are often used to analyze or comment on current events and issues by using a fictional setting, or to parody the documentary form itself. They may be either comedic or dramatic in form, although comedic mockumentaries are more common. Poetic: resembling fragments of the world (e.g. montage of events)
