A Mboya: Teaching Goals for 2011-12  PPreparation will be thorough  AAlert and attentive to class needs  CCharacter development by each student  EExcellence is the standard. Aim high! Delivery: I will:  Make lessons interactive by setting clear and attainable learning objectives to engage the learners.  Ask probing questions and incorporate learners feedback. Every other week there will be a hands- on content-related learning activities. Students will be participatory learners.

 Include every student in class and small group discussions. Assist students to learn English and science terms by positive reinforcement and relating to Turkish examples  Make a concerted effort to relate each Unit to everyday life in Turkey and rest of the world - e.g. Analyze school menu and weekly diet.  Investigate local cases of pollution.  Applications of photosynthesis and respiration.  Local ecology and increased environmental awareness and practice:- agriculture; marine biology, conservation; investigate biotic and abiotic factors in Tarsus dam.  Discuss science related careers.

Integrating IB and School Mission statements  Inquirers – learners will acquire skills in inquiry and apply them in class and everyday life.  Knowledgeable – learners will acquire in-depth knowledge and develop an understanding across a variety of disciplines.  Thinkers – learners apply thinking skills critically and make reasoned, ethical decisions.  Communicators – learners understand and express ideas and information confidently in more than one language.  Principled and caring – learners act with honesty and integrity; show compassion and respect towards others; they take responsibility for their own actions.

 Semester Projects for Grade 10 1 Cell city poster or model of a prokaryotic cell; 2 Energy project – workout DVD or high energy food. 1 Biofuels Project – design and use a practical device powered by a biofuel; 2 Make an annotated 4D model of the nitrogen cycle; or research and make a brochure on local pollution.  WebQuests and internet research: aimed at strengthening research and writing skills. Comprehension: reinforce reading and comprehension skills using case studies and guided lab procedures. Basic lab skills for grade 10; advanced for IB [see next slide].

Grade 10 Lab skills – 5 success indicators  Follow procedure in given practical lab sheet and observe safety as you collect data.  Make observations and record them; collect data and present the data in a table or chart[s].  Plot accurate charts and graphs and analyze or interpret them showing trends and relations.  Conclusion – draw a conclusion by relating your stated hypothesis to the data you have collected and analyzed.  Evaluate the lab by suggesting an application to everyday life. By the end of second semester students should be able to write a simple, orderly lab report following and showing the 6 steps of the scientific method.

IB practical investigations - indicators  Quality data – do not collect frivolous data;  Quantitative data – collect adequate amounts;  Collection and representation of data – relevant method used to collect data; various modes of representing data;  Data transformation and analysis – charts showing percentages and other stats. Show error bars or trends lines; use these to highlight any correlations.  Conclusion – refer to the hypothesis and use the data collected and analyzed to support or disprove it.  Evaluation of the procedure/method pointing out strengths and weaknesses; make suggestions to improve the procedure.

Success Indicators for my students By second semester 5 [or more] goals in the school mission will be integrated into students lives; at least three of every four of my students will display positive personal development in assimilating and applying the school’s mission and IB learner profile.
