SAMR A Model of Technology Integration

Work up the Ladder S = Substitution Direct substitute for existing task in the classroom Example Using an iPad for notes rather than handwritten notes How to move up to Augmentation – What will be gained by replacing with new technology?

Work up the Ladder A – Augmentation Technology provides a functional improvement but the task is still a direct substitution Example: Using Word to write a research paper. The technology allows for improvements such as Spell Check and Grammar Check Moving Up the Ladder to Modification Question: How is the original task being modified to depend fundamentally on the technology being used?

Work up the Ladder M – Modification Significant task redesign for the technology Example: Have students respond in a blog format to a question. Question to move up the ladder: How is the lesson redesigned to make the technology irreplaceable to the lesson.

Work up the Ladder R- Redesign Technology creates a new task that was previously inconceivable Example: Students create a documentary to show what they have learned. Students use eBackpack to hand in a paperless research paper and receive the grading notes through eBackpack.
