Advent A Prayer Service For A Catholic School

2 Come Lord Jesus

3 Advent is a time of patient waiting for the birth of Christ who is the light of the world

4 Opening Prayer In the Name of the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit
God of power and mercy, open our hearts and remove the things that hinder us from receiving Christ with joy so that we may share his wisdom and become one with him when comes in glory for he lives and reigns with you and the holy spirit for ever and ever. Amen

5 Scripture Reading John 1:6-9 For the First Week of Advent
There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light. The true light that enlighten every man was coming into the world.

6 Reflection Take a moment to reflect how we can prepare our hearts for the coming of our saviour

7 Chr Light the first purple candle in the Advent Wreath
(Music Light the Advent Candle ) After the lighting of the first candle The Advent Wreath is green, the colour of new life and hope. It reminds us of the baby Jesus who came to show us the way to everlasting life. We light the first purple candle on the Advent wreath on the first Sunday of Advent. The purple candle represents penance. This is the small sacrifices we make to welcome Jesus into our hearts. The pink candle represents Joy and it reminds us of the joy of meeting Jesus at Christmas. The Advent wreath is circle of evergreens which reminds us of God’s everlasting love. The Advent wreath is lit from a single candle and it reminds us of Jesus who comes to us as the light of the world.

8 Prayers of the Faithful
The response is Lord hear our prayer During this Advent season help us to think of those who are less fortunate than us. We pray to the Lord Response As we look forward to celebrating Christmas with our families, may Christ’s words and values find a place in our heart. We pray to the Lord As night falls quicker and days get colder we wait for you to warm our hearts and deliver us from darkness. We pray to the Lord May the Advent wreath formed with evergreens into a circle remind us of God’s everlasting love and new life ad hope we receive with the coming of Christ. We pray to the Lord

9 Closing Prayer Lord, like Mary may we always be ready to say “yes” to your plan so that Jesus may be born in us. We ask this through Christ our Lord Music O Come Emmanuel
