2 The Progressive Movement Many people came to the aid of the progressives in the early 1900s, including newspaper journalists and magazine editors They helped expose the corruption of big business through interviews, stories, and journal articles

3 The Progressive Movement Muckrakers: Journalists and writers who helped bring reform issues to the attention of the public They helped investigate and expose corruption and injustice through articles in popular magazines

4 The Progressive Movement The most famous muckraker was Upton Sinclair and his novel, “The Jungle” His novel helped tell the story of the unsanitary and unhealthy conditions that people had to work at in a meat packing plant in Chicago

5 The Progressive Movement President Teddy Roosevelt after reading this novel, passed the Meat Inspection Act: Ensured clean conditions when processing meat

6 The Progressive Movement Teddy Roosevelt (T.R.) was the first progressive president (1901-1908) and he focused his reforms on fixing business conditions and equal rights for workers (Square Deal) T.R‘s other major law: Pure Food and Drug Act: Outlawed dishonest labeling of food and drugs

7 The Progressive Movement Other famous Progressives included: Jane Adams: Created “Hull House” to help educate the poor Jacob Riis: Took photos of slum life and exposed them to the public in a book called “How the Other Half Lives”

8 The Progressive Movement Women were involved in all aspects of the Progressive Movement Their main goal was suffrage Suffrage: The right to vote!

10 Susan B. Anthony was a progressive leader of the women’s right movement 1920 the 19 th Amendment was passed giving women the right to vote

11 The Progressive Movement (1908-1912) President Taft was elected and continued President Roosevelt’s progressive ways by making standards for factories and abolishing monopolies (1912-1920) President Wilson was elected with his New Freedom platform. Continued progressivism but also got us through WWI
