To convert one measurement to another, you need to know the appropriate conversion factor. A conversion factor is an equation that shows how two units of measurement are related. Converting Between Units

Common Conversions for Length Commom Conversions for Length 1 km = 1,000 m 1 m = 100 cm 1 m = 1,000 mm 1 cm = 10 mm

Steps to Converting Between Units 1.Being by writing down the measurement you want to convert. 1.Find a conversion factor that relates the two units you are converting. 1.Write the conversion factor as a fraction. Make sure to place the units you are converting from in the denominator. 1.Multiply the measurement you are converting from by the fraction. When you do this, the units in the measurement will cancel out with the units in the denominator of the fraction.Your answer will then be in the units you are converting to.

Suppose you buy a 0.5 kg bag of carrots. How many grams of carrots do you have? 1. 0.5 kg = ? g 2. 1 kg = 1,000 g 3. 1,000 g 1 kg 4. 0.5 kg x 1,000 g = 500 g 1 kg Example 1

Suppose you run for 1.5 km. How many meter did you run? Example 2

1. Read the letter in your paper written by a tourist visiting New York City. 2. Use the conversion factors to convert all English units to metric units. 3. Do your calculations on your notebook. Class Practice/Homework
