2 Where to find Refworks Go to the Jotello F Soga Library’s website(http://www.library.up.ac.za/vet) Click on “Refworks”

3 Enter your student/ personnel number ( e.g.12345678) If you have a PIN type it here. If not click on SUBMIT and choose a new PIN on the next page You must be a registered Library. If not please complete a Library registration form and e-mail to: antoinette.lourens@up.ac.za or Fax to: +27 12 529 8302

4 Login to Refworks Click on “Login”

5 For first time users click on “Sign up for an individual account” For regular login The groupcode for off-campus login (rwunivpretoria)

6 Supply your Name and Surname Choose your own Login name and Password ( NB. make a note of this for future use !!!) Supply your e-mail address Enter the shown code Select a “Type of User” and “Focus area” Click on “Register” Sign up for an individual account

7 You will find a link to these databases from ”Library in Your Office” CAB Direct Science Direct Compiling your personal database on Refworks

8 Click on “Download Selected references” Do a search on Cab Direct and mark the records you wish to add to your personal database on Refworks Mark the records by ticking the checkboxes. The selected records may now be exported to Refworks.

9 Decide on the fields to export to your personal databases. Click on “Submit”

10 Select “Save” and save the file…

11 …somewhere on your desktop. (Note the extension of the file is.ris)

12 1. Login to Refworks 2. Click on “References” 3. Click then on “Import”

13 Select CAB Direct from the drop down menu. The second window will automatically change to CAB Direct Browse for the saved.ris file on your desktop. Click on “Import”

14 Click on “View last imported folder” to see the references you selected to add to your personal database in Refworks

15 Do a search on Science Direct and select some of the records Click on “Export citations”

16 Select “Refworks direct export”

17 How to get a list of your references to use while working offline 1.Select References 2.Select Export.

18 1. Select All References, My List or a Folder of references to export. 2. Select Citation List as the Export Format. 3. Click Export.

19 1. A new window will open with a citation list. 2. This list is a compact list for printing or saving that includes the REF ID, Authors, Title and Pub Year fields. 3. Save or print this list. 4. Close RefWorks. Use this number between double curly brackets {{number}} to cite a reference when working offline A new window will open with a citation list. 20 Enter an in-text citation by using two open curly brackets {{ followed by a reference ID number followed by two close curly brackets e.g.{{34}} for Ref ID number 34. Multiple citations must be separated by semicolons: {{34;45;23}} Save your paper when finished.

21 To format your bibliography, log in to RefWorks. 1.Select Bibliography from the toolbar. 2. Select the desired output style. 3. Browse to find your paper. 4. Click Create Bibliography. 2 1 3 4
