THE WATER CYCLE Taylor Irwin

Content Area: Science Grade Level: 2nd Summary: The purpose of this Instructional PowerPoint is to have the students better understand the phases of the water cycle and how each phase relates to the other. Learning Objective: Given websites that contain diagrams and illustrations about the water cycle and its processes, the students will be able to interpret the information with 100% accuracy. Content Standard: Ask questions, make logical predictions, plan investigations, and represent data. Accomplishment: GLE Compare the life cycles of various organisms. Use records and graphs of seasonal temperature changes to draw conclusions about the weather during different times of the year.

Facts: Go to this website and explore the science of the Water Cycle. KidZone The Water Cycle, which is also known as the hydrologic cycle, is the process that water goes through to circulate water from the ground, back to the sky, and back to the ground again. The main basic processes included in the water cycle are: Condensation, Precipitation, Transpiration, and Evaporation. In this process, water goes through various phases: liquid, solid & gas.

Video: Watch this video for an interesting perception on the Water Cycle from NASA:NASA Water Cycle Take notes from the video on any new information you learn. This will be useful for your diagram.

Facts: Go to the following websites for an accurate description and diagram of how the water cycle works. Water Cyle Diagram Study Jams Water Cycle

Question: What process occurs when water vapor in the air gets cold and changes back into liquid, forming clouds?

Answer: Condensation

Question: is when the sun heats up water in rivers or lakes or the ocean and turns it into vapor or steam. The water vapor or steam leaves the river, lake or ocean and goes into the air. ^ Partner up with your neighbor and decide which process is the answer above.

Answer: Evaporation

Question: The water cycle is the Earth’s way of :
A- Getting rid of water B-Recycling water C-Using up all of our water D-Cleaning our water **Put this answer on your worksheet with your partner as well.

Illustrated Diagram In this task, you will create your own diagram/illustration of the water cycle based on the information you’ve learned so far. Draw this on your worksheet with your partners help. Do the best you can and do not worry about the artistic ability put into the diagram. Focus primarily on the getting the processes in the correct order.

Does your diagram look like this?

Check your work! Compare your diagram with your partner and if there are processes missing or in the wrong order, correct it and explain why you had It in that order.

Summary: In this lesson, the students learned the basic processes included in the water cycle. In addition to learning the 4 steps in the water cycle, they also learned how each process relates to the other. The students were also instructed to design their own interpretation of the Water Cycle in an illustrated diagram.
