11 NEWPORT Santa Croce sull’Arno - Pisa (Italy) 22nd October 2015 Mercedes Roig INESCOP LIFE 13 ENV/IT/470 Environmentally friendly natural products instead of chemical products in the degreasing phase of the tanning cycle LIFE - EcoDefatting INESCOP PROJECT PROGRESS 12 Months Progress Meeting

2 Tasks carried out by INESCOP (Feb – Sep’15) ACTION DATE B1. Demonstration of natural products in the defatting phase at laboratory level Feb – Sep’15 C2. Environmental monitoring of defatting with natural products at laboratory level Feb – Sep’15 B2. Defatting at a semi-industrial level by using natural products Jun – Sep’15 C3. Environmental monitoring of defatting with natural products at semi-industrial level Jun – Sep’15 D. Communication and dissemination actionsContinuos E1. Project managementContinuos

B1. Demonstration of natural products in the defatting phase at laboratory level Objectives: –Obtain leathers defatted with last EcoDefatting products sintetized by UNIFI (EDF19 - EDF24) Tasks: –Definition of the leather defatting process: depickling, defatting, pickling and tanning –Defatting test with last EcoDefatting products at laboratory level (EDF19 - EDF24) Test & ResultS & control sheet

Trials with EcoDefatting products EcoDefatting products tested: EDF 19 to EDF 24

Defatting procedure

Defatting results: fat removed from skins

Defatting results: physical properties (I)

Defatting results: physical properties (II)

C2. Monitoring of the environmental impact at laboratory level Objective: Quantify and evaluate the environmental impact of defatting residual baths from commercial and natural products (EDF1-EDF25) Tasks: Chemical analysis of defatting residual baths by means of standard methods: COD, BOD and biodegradability Responsible: INESCOP

COD results

BOD results

Biodegradability results

Tasks: - Definition of the leather defatting process: depickling, defatting, pickling and tanning - Perform defatting test on pickled sheep-skins at semi-industrial level with the selected product (EDF20), - Evaluate the effectiveness of the product in different quantities (2, 3, 4 and 5% on weight of skin inside the tanning drum) Objectives: - To obtain leathers defatted at semi-industrial level with the product selected as optimum (EDF20) Action B.2: Defatting at semi-industrial level by using natural products

Defatting results: fat removed from skins

Defatting results: physical properties (I)

Defatting results: physical properties (II)

C3. Monitoring of the environmental impact at semi-industrial level Objective: Quantify and evaluate the environmental impact of defatting stage with the product selected as optimum (EDF20) in different quantities (2, 3, 4 and 5% on weight of skin) Tasks: Chemical analysis of defatting residual baths by means of standard methods: COD, BOD and biodegradability Responsible: INESCOP

Biodegradability results

19 Next steps ACTION B2. Defatting at semi-industrial level by using natural products C3. Environmental monitoring of defatting with natural products at semi-industrial level B3. Demonstration of natural products defatting at a pre-industrial level C3. Environmental monitoring of defatting with natural products at pre-industrial level D. Communication and dissemination actions E1. Project management
