Aim: How do consumers obtain their food? Briefly describe what you see is taking place in the image on the left.

Herbivores Animals that eat plants or producers or autotrophs Primary consumers

Carnivores Animals that eat other animals or meat 2 types: predators: kill & eat other animals scavengers: eat animals that are already dead Ex) vultures Could be secondary or tertiary consumers Could be top predators

Decomposers Part of consumers Use O 2 to decompose by decomposition  aerobic process Eat wastes & dead organisms & decompose or break down the wastes & dead material into simple materials like CO 2 & nitrogen compounds  recycle into the air or soil! Function at all levels of a food chain

Group Activity Analyze the following food chains. List the different types of consumers in it & state what types of consumers they are. Grass  mouse  snake  decomposer Grass  mouse  hawk  decomposer Grass  mouse  owl  decomposer Grass  cricket  frog  owl  decomposer

Individual Work Create a food web using the food chains. Grass  mouse  snake  decomposer Grass  mouse  hawk  decomposer Grass  mouse  owl  decomposer Grass  cricket  frog  owl  decomposer

Homework Discuss what types of consumers are found in a balanced aquarium. In addition, discuss what abiotic & biotic factors are present in an aquarium. Does any recycling take place in an aquarium? Is this an ecosystem?
