VITAMINS & MINERALS

 Vitamins are micronutrients, which are very much essential for growth and for metabolism.

Vitamins are classified into two types – based on their solubility (what they dissolve in): 1. Water soluble Vitamins - Vitamin ‘B’ complex and Vitamin ‘C’ 2. Fat soluble vitamins. - Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and Vitamin K

FACTS OF VITAMINS Vitamins are very sensitive to heat. Over cooking leads to destruction of its chemical nature and some times leads toxic. Excess intake of antibiotics, destroy useful bacteria in our intestine, further leads to vitamin B 12 deficiency. Consuming highly polished rice, leads to vitamin B 1 deficiency.

Vitamins and minerals act as regulators and catalysts for a variety of bodily functions. Vitamins are essential for: – Building body tissues such as bones, skin, glands, nerves, and blood. – Assisting in the metabolizing of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates so you receive energy from food. – Promoting healing – Preventing nutritional deficiency diseases.

Minerals minerals are inorganic substances found in food that your body needs for growth and health. There are two kinds of minerals: – Macrominerals - your body needs in larger amounts. They include calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and chloride.

Minerals – Others are required in smaller quantities and are sometimes called trace minerals, e.g. iron, zinc, iodine, fluoride, selenium and copper. – Despite being required in smaller amounts, trace minerals are no less important than other minerals

Minerals involved in the formation of bones and teeth they are essential constituents of body fluids and tissues they are components of enzyme systems involved in normal nerve function.

The body requires different amounts of each mineral; people have different requirements, according to their age, sex, physiological state (e.g. pregnancy) and sometimes their state of health.
