Bellwork: Mr. Smith went out to eat yesterday. His receipt shows that he bought two drinks for $2.50 each. An appetizer for $5.50, an entree for $11.75 and a dessert for $4.25. How much total money did Mr. Smith spend, not including tip?

Mathematics is based on patterns and structure. You can look for those patterns to help solve problems. If you know how numbers work together, you can find easier ways to solve problems.

1. Six of the 24 students in a homeroom have an electronic tablet. Predict how many students out of 200 have an electronic tablet.

2. Tucker ran 2.25 kilometers each day for 5 days. How many kilometers did he run altogether?

3. The perimeter of a triangle can be found by adding the lengths of the sides. If a triangle has side lengths 4 5/8 inches, 3 3/8 inches, and 5 inches. What is the perimeter of the triangle?

4. John invented a game. He used chalk to draw a rectangle that was 10 feet wide and 15 feet long for a space to play his game. Several other children joined in, and John realized that the rectangle was now too small. He decided to triple the length and triple the width to create a new play area. Compare the perimeters of the original play space and the new play space. Determine how much greater the new perimeter is than the original perimeter. Then, compare the areas of the original and the new play spaces. Determine how much greater the new area is than the original area.

5. Marcy has three shirts and five pairs of pants. Her shirts are red, green, and white. Her pants are navy, black, tan, brown and yellow. How many different shirt and pants combinations are there? List all the combinations.

6. Michael shovels snow to earn money. He knows that for 120 square feet it takes him 30 minutes to shovel. 160 square feet takes him 40 minutes to shovel. 200 square feet takes him 50 minutes to shovel. 240 square feet takes him an hour to shovel. 280 square feet takes him 70 minutes to shovel. One of Michael's neighbors has a 600 square foot driveway. How long will it take Michael to shovel the snow from this driveway? What size driveway can Michael shovel in 75 minutes?

In mathematics, if you recognize a pattern, it can help you to find shortcuts to solve the rest of the problem or similar problems. When you look for and use patterns, you are using repeated reasoning.

The Taco Hut likes to give away free food on a regular basis to encourage customers to return. They give away a free taco every 4 days, free nachos every 5 days and a free burrito every 6 days. 1. In the first 60 days of the promotion, on which days will a taco be given away for free? 2. In the first 60 days, on which days will nachos be given away for free? 3. In the first 60 days, on which days will a burrito be given away for free? 4. Are there any days in which more than one food item is given away? It so, which days? 5. If all three items were given away today, how many days until all three are given away on the same day again? Explain your reasoning.

6. Elyse is saving up to buy a new digital camera. She is looking at two different models, the X150 and the X250. The X150 costs $99, while the X250 costs $129. She begins with $25 in her savings account and deposits $10 each week. How many more weeks must she save to purchase the X150 Model. How many more weeks must she save to purchase the X250 model?

7. Anya tracked the amount of snowfall during two different snowstorms. During the first snowstorm, it snowed 1 inch per hour. The second storm produced an inch of snow every two hours. How many more inches of snow did the first storm produce in 6 hours than the second storm? Graph this situation on the coordinate plane.

8. The Drama club is building a wall for their next production. The wall is 12 feet long. They are placing the studs every 18 inches. If there are studs on each end of the wall, how many studs will they place?

9. A pattern is shown. 1, 5, 21, 85, 341,... Describe the rule for the pattern and find the next term.

10. A candy factory produces 360 pounds of candy in 12 hours. How much candy does the factory produce in 5 hours?
