HEALTH 8 LIFE LEARNING CHOICES

WHAT WE WILL LEARN How to use resources effectively to manage and explore life roles and career opportunities and challenges To determine and develop time management strategies and skills to establish personal balance

Let’s discuss What are some of the things you have going on in your life? Talk to the person next to you about what you do outside of school

BALANCE What is balance? How do we know when life is not in balance? What are some clues?

BALANCE What does it feel like when you have a million things on the go? Have you ever forgotten to do something because you were too busy? Or didn’t have enough time for an assignment or studying? How does that feel?

CREATING BALANCE One of the ways to help create balance in your life is by learning how to manage your time. Time management is a thinking skill that can help you in many aspects of your life If you can find a way to time manage, it will make your life easier and less stressful

TIME MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES AND SKILLS Let’s brainstorm different strategies to manage our time

STRATEGIES Create good study habits Get rid of distractions Write down assignments and due dates Make a to-do list Set priorities (do you really need to watch another episode on Netflix?) Don’t procrastinate! Prioritize assignments Postpone unnecessary activities until work is done

Time management

TIME MANAGEMENT How can all of these strategies help you manage your time between school, family, leisure, volunteer activities, etc.?

Go through the worksheets provided, and highlight which strategies you think are most useful to you In another color, highlight strategies that you would like to implement in your life. Strategies that can help you improve in and outside of school

JOURNAL REFLECTION Do you think you manage your time well? Is there anything else you can improve on? What are some time management strategies you think you would like to use?

GOAL SETTING Have you ever set a goal for anything before? Did you achieve that goal? Or is it something you are still working towards?

WHAT IS A GOAL? The result or achievement toward which effort is directed

GOAL SETTING Goal setting is important in peoples lives. Without setting goals for ourselves, it is difficult and less motivating to achieve things. It can be a big goal, like playing for the NHL, or owning your own restaurant. Or it can be a smaller goal, like cleaning your room before your parents ask just to make them happy How do goals make you feel?

GOALS What does it feel like to achieve a goal? What happens if you don’t achieve a goal?

Let’s look at our goals How have you been doing at working to achieve the goal(s) you set for yourself last week? Is there anything you can improve on? Write a short reflection based on week 1 of working to achieve the goal(s) you set for yourself We well re-visit these goals next week and see how you did in week 2 of achieving these goals

ACADEMIC GOALS How many of you set academic goals for yourself last week?

ACADEMIC GOALS Is there a specific subject you want to improve in? Or do well on a test in an area you struggle with? What types of learning strategies and plans can you use?

ACADEMIC GOALS Today we are all going to make 3 academic goals that you want to achieve during this school year. If your goal last week was an academic one, include it in your 3 today. Order your goals and arrange them according to priority; most important to least important. Your goals should have specific time periods throughout the year What are some strategies you can use to achieve the goals? (think of some time management and balance strategies we talked about) What will be your learning plan to achieve these goals?

GOALS AND PRIORITIES RELATED TO LEARNING AND CAREERS For some of you, you might already know what career you would like to do. If not, that’s okay! You have lots of time to figure that out.

WHAT IS A CAREER? A career is a way of making a living, an occupation or profession

THEN WHAT IS A JOB? A job is a paid position of employment Sales manager, teacher, pediatric nurse, vet, construction worker, chef

VOCATION A strong feeling of dedication for a particular career or occupation You love what you do and have a passion for it. You’ve always known this is what you want to do and will do whatever you can to do the best you can do in that position

AVOCATION A secondary activity undertaken in addition to one’s main work What the heck does that mean??

AVOCATION Essentially, an avocation is your hobby. What you like to do in your spare time. What are your hobbies? (NOT Netflix and chill. Doesn’t count!)

CAREER VS. JOB What is the difference between a career and a job?

WHAT INFLUENCES YOU CHOICE OF OCCUPATION? With the people around you, list some things that affect a persons choice of career.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO? If you are not sure what you want to be when you grow up, don’t panic! Just list some things you might want to do; things you are interested in. Make a mind map of a potential career path that meets your goals, interests, skills, and values Due next Monday, October 26 th : research the career you chose, and write a one page “report” on it.

CAREER REPORT Questions to be answered: What is the career? (1 mark) Why did you choose this career? (3 marks) What does this career involve? (2 marks) How does this fit with your goals and interests (2 marks) What do you need to do in order to reach that career goal? (ex. Experience, volunteering, education, etc.) (2 marks) Out of 10 marks total. You will need to do research, and type or write neatly your “report.” You will have lab time next Monday to finish up your assignment
