1 Microscope Lab Letter “e” and Banana

2 FYI’s Brand new – don’t break them they’re $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Housed in Bremmer’s office Microscope #5 – do not use!! Each table will always have specific microscopes Table A 1&2, B 3&4 … etc

3 More FYI’s MUST be drawn in pencil Drawing paper (back file cabinet)
Lab Drawings MUST BE SIGNED BY ME!!! You cannot go home and re-draw them to make them prettier or neater. Why?? NOT ACCURATE If you have pink eye/sty please DO NOT use the scope – notify me Mascara  prepare to clean .. For a while…

4 Parts of the Microscope
Ocular It has a moving eye piece but YOU WILL NOT BE TOUCHING / MOVING IT!! 10 x Magnification

5 Revolving Nosepiece Holds the Objective Lenses
4 x – Scanning  Red Stripe 10 x – Low Power  Yellow Stripe 40 x – High Power  Blue Stripe 100x – VERY High Power  White Stripe

6 Total Magnification Ocular (eyepiece) x Objective Lens
10x x 4x = 40x Scanning 10x x 10x = 100x Low Power 10x x 40x = 400x High Power 10x x 100x= 1000x VERY High Power

7 Stage Stage Clips Note knobs underneath stage (will move the slide)
Top knob- moves slide towards / away from you Bottom knob – moves slide right / left

8 Condenser Note knob underneath the stage
Knob brings light closer/farther away from the stage/slide

9 Iris Diaphragm Works like a camera lens Allows light through
Note knob underneath stage

10 Base has on/off switch PLEASE REMEMBER TO TURN THIS BUTTON OFF!!
These microscopes work off of battery …

11 Coarse Adj. Knob Fine Adj. Knob Move BOTH knobs on each side at the same time!!!! Obj is only used under 4x and 10x (scanning and low power) Move BOTH knobs on each side at the same time!!!! Obj is only used under 40x and 100x (but can also be used under 4x and 10x after coarse focus to crisp up the view)

12 Discussion of Mag, Resolution & Measurement
Magnification is limited by its resolution Mag – how big/large something can get Res – how clear/separate/distinct something can get

13 Parfocal Once scope is focused in 10x obj (crisp), gently, without moving stage/slide, move 40x obj into place and ONLY USE THE FINE FOCUS! Do the same for 100x Increase the light into the obj (so close to the specimen) Increase light  Increase resolution  increase mag

14 Sheet of paper – Field of view How to make a drawing
