2 Pollution threatens our oceans, lakes, and rivers… …as well as the creatures that live there

3 Many of our waters are unsafe for fishing, swimming, or can not maintain healthy populations of wildlife. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, pollution from agriculture contributes to poor water quality in more than 100,000 miles of rivers and streams in the United States, along with 2,500 square miles of lakes and 2,900 square miles of estuaries.

5 Smog and other airborne pollutants plague our cities… …endangering the health of all living things

6 The air was unhealthy to breathe many more times in 2010 and in 2011 than the public was alerted to 2010: Across the state of California, for more than a third of the year, at least part of the state experienced smog levels exceeding the health standard The public was not alerted about the poor air quality because the 2008 standard was not set at a level to protect public health Power plants emitted 1,927,569.3 tons of nitrogen oxide pollution, a key precursor to ozone pollution, into the environment in 2009.
