AP Literature and Composition Welcome back! January 4, 2010 Ms. Cares

Welcome back - Agenda: 1. Reflection on where we go from here. 2.Comments on the reflection due Wednesday. 3. Small group “book clubs.” Homework: Reflection on your selected novel is DUE Wednesday, 1/6.

Where do we go from here? Yes, we reflect a lot in here, but it is always helpful - especially after a long break - to identify what we need, what we want, and where we plan to go. Call it a New Year’s Resolution, if you will. Take 7 minutes and complete a freewrite/brainstorm in which you share what you would like to see out of this class and what you need out of this class in the coming months. Please be honest.

Winter Break Novel Review Your task is two-fold: 1. Review the novel: what did you like/dislike and think about the novel? Please, be honest. 2. Show me that you read! The review cannot be a plot synopsis (it should not read like Spark Notes!). Show me what you THINK about the novel!

Small Group Book Discussions: Both today and tomorrow, you will work in small groups to further unpack the novels that you read over break. The agenda is as follows: Monday: General observations and ideas regarding the novels. Think book club! Tuesday: A more focused approach. You will work together to create “crib sheets” regarding the novels. You will then present these to the class, and they will be part of your “study packs” for the May AP exam.

Today’s Discussion - “Book Club” You should use today to simply discuss the novels that you read over break. In your small groups, answer and take notes on the following questions. Use these as brainstorming questions for the reflection piece due Wednesday. Every group member needs to participate in today’s discussion. I will be watching for equal sharing; use the “Round Robin” approach if necessary.

Questions for today’s discussion: Did you like or dislike the novel? Provide general reactions and explain them. Did you like/dislike the following: characters setting tone pace of the novel subject matter diction and syntax What were your favorite/least favorite parts? Let the discussion go where it goes…
