Brainstorming Principles Reporter Chun-Feng Liao Sep 12,2005 Source D.Bellin and S.S.Simone, ”Brainstorming: A Discovery Technique,” The CRC Card Book,1997.

Brainstorming  Several people can generate more ideas than one person working alone  Each person must feel free to explore ideas, make suggestion, be creative, and have fun.  Suspend judgment and encourage involvement. Strong notions about right and wrong can censor good ideas In a brainstorm session, the group should be guided by a set of principles, and propose any alternative from the most logical to the most absurd.

Brainstorming Principles 1. All ideas are potential good ideas. 2. Think fast and furiously first, ponder later. 3. Give every voice a turn. 4. A little humor can be a powerful force.

All ideas are potential good ideas  Used to breaking down any tendency to censor before you speak.  Golden rule of brainstorming: Treat every suggestion as if it were your own Don’t decide that someone else’s idea is dumb or brilliant.  All ideas are equal, because all ideas have the potential to lead to an unanticipated solution.  Facilitator is responsible for protecting the brainstorming without carried away.

Think fast and furiously first, ponder later  Studies have shown that when people in a group take turns in quick succession, one person triggers another.  Everyone should toss out the ideas out as quickly as they can.  Save careful consideration for later discussion

Give every voice a turn  Rotation Start with one person and then go around the table, each person contributing one idea. Continue until members are truly forced to “pass”.

A little humor can be a powerful force  Humor helps convert a random group of people into a cohesive team. Laughing together creates a bond between people.  Brainstorming with a little humor can open doors and break down barriers.
