3 3 1939-1945 Second World war. Japan surrendered. 1950 - JUSE invited Dr.Edward Deming who was Statistical consultant in US. He taught SQC to Managers and Engineers. Gave 14 famous points to management and use of PDCA cycle. Introduced concept of variance to Japanese. 1954- JUSE invited Dr.Joseph Moses Juran a management consultant from US defined quality as “Fitness for use”. Conducted seminars to top and middle mgmt. levels explaining their role in promoting QC activities. His visit made them to realize QC as a tool of mgmt. Dr Arnand V Feigenbaum of United States, Known as father of TQM published Total Quality Control: Engg. And Mgmt. in 1961. Japanese adopted. M.R.S. Sastry TQM

5 5 M.R.S. Sastry TQM Dr Joseph Moses Juran Birth 24 th Dec 1904 Dr.Joseph Juran born in Romania. Did graduation in Engg and Law. 1924-pursued varied career in mgt. as Engineer, Industrial executive, govt. administrator, university Professor, corporate director and mgt. consultant. 1951 - publishing “Quality Control Handbook” Mid 50’s – along with Deming he conducted his internationally famous ‘Management of Quality courses to top and middle level executive seminars in japan. His definition of Quality as “Fitness for use” is classic. 1981-Awarded the medal f the second class Sacred Treasure by emperor of Japan for development of Quality control in Japan and facilitation of US and Japanese friendship.

Sastry TQM 1939 - received his doctorate of philosophy in chemical engineering from the University of Tokyo. 1949 - developed and delivered the first basic quality control course for the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) 1962. - credited with creating the Japanese quality circle movement 1972- received ASQ’s Eugene L. Grant Award 1988- was given the Shewhart Medal for “outstanding contributions to dev.of qlty ctrol theory, principles, techniques and standardization activities for both Japanese and world industry 1993 - The Asian Pacific Quality Organization named the Harrington-Ishikawa Medal after him Ishikawa was also a recipient of the Second Order of the Sacred Treasure from the Emperor of Japan—the same recognition bestowed upon W. Edward Deming and Joseph M.Juran. Ishikawa built on Feigenbaum’s concept of total quality and suggested that all employees have a greater role to play Kaoru Ishikawa (1915-1989)

Val Feigenbaum rose to become GE's executive for worldwide manufacturing operations and quality in New York City for a 10-year period while Donald Feigenbaum achieved major management leadership in GE's aircraft gas turbine business headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Feigenbaums, who are brothers, later co-founded the General Systems Company based in Pittsfield, Massachusetts but operating globally — Armand as president and chief executive officer and Donald as executive vice president. "Quality is about customer value today," says Armand Feigenbaum, "Defect-free quality is no longer a guarantee of greater profitability," he points out. "In consumer products, particularly in automotive, people are now buying based upon their perception of value. He stresses that "quality is cycling toward management and the quality of management again." M.R.S. Sastry TQM
