2. Learning Intention To explore the recommended approach to imagery, word choice, link and evaluation questions To assess some examples of other candidates’ answers to these types of questions

3. Success Criteria To emerge with a better appreciation of questions regarding analysis of imagery or word choice, understanding of the linking function or evaluation of the passage.

4. 2003 Past Paper Each group will be given a different part of the passage to look over. Read over this section closely and identify any vocabulary you are not familiar with. Write a brief summary, which describes the main points/gist/ideas of the article.

6. Close Reading Workshop Imagery: –State what the image is (e.g. metaphor, simile, personification etc.) –Quote the image and state what is being compared to what (own words). –State the connotations of the comparison. –State how the use of imagery adds to your understanding of the passage.

7. Close Reading Workshop Read through the responses to the following imagery question: Discuss how effective you find the writer's use of imagery in lines 51-70 in making her point clear. You may refer in your answer to one or more examples.

8. Close Reading Workshop In pairs/threes, read over the responses and assign marks to each response. Remember to look back at the formula and decide how effective the person has been in answering the question. N.B. ½ marks are available for A questions only. This only applies to the exam, no ½ are awarded in the NABs.

11. You try… Applying the formula (and without copying a 2 mark answer) try to write an answer, which goes into enough depth to gain full marks.

12. Imagery Each group will be given an example imagery question. As a group, you must write out an answer which covers ALL steps of the formula and be prepared to report back. Nominate one person who will act as your group envoy. Their job is to explain HOW they used the method to arrive at the answer. Your job is to check they haven’t missed anything out.

13. Test Write your name and date. Without looking at your sheet, write down ALL the formulae for Understanding and Analysis questions.
