NFMCC Meeting 3/12/06 A. Bross LiH Absorbers Muon Cooling R&D NFMCC Meeting March 12, 2006 A. Bross

NFMCC Meeting 3/12/06 A. Bross  2D Transverse Cooling and  Figure of merit: M=L R dE  /ds M 2 (4D cooling) for different absorbers Absorber Design Issues H 2 is clearly Best - Neglecting Engineering Issues Windows, Safety

NFMCC Meeting 3/12/06 A. Bross LiH Absorbers  LiH is an interesting absorber material to study u Figure of merit is relative good u Safety concerns are much less of an issue when compared to LH 2 s Water is obviously an issue u Potentially Much cheaper than LH 2  Need to understand u Stability under intense radiation u Detailed knowledge of thermal characteristics s Heat conduction, Thermal expansion, etc. –Allows for precise calculations –Determines how to cool s Depends critically on production technique for producing the LiH disks u Fabrication Techniques s Encapsulation very likely required s Cooling

NFMCC Meeting 3/12/06 A. Bross LiH Heating

NFMCC Meeting 3/12/06 A. Bross Test Program  Produce encapsulating cast (not pressed) samples u Small disk (5-10 cm) for intense radiation exposure s At Fermilab Radiation Test Facility s Look at Material stability primarily s Temperature Profile u Large disk (30 cm) for detailed thermal conductivity studies s External Cooling + Internal Heating s Potential absorber for MICE Phase I s Non-instrumented, no cooling This will be far more involved than these 3 bullets might indicate.

NFMCC Meeting 3/12/06 A. Bross Engineering Concept  SS ring with brazed cooling tubes  Encapsulated with thin SS windows u 5-10 micron  Instrumentation ports u Hermetic connectors s Temp sensors s Heater power u Gas pressure port s For decomposition under intense rad studies  Cast LiH with sensors  Encapsulate via e-beam welding of thin windows

NFMCC Meeting 3/12/06 A. Bross Plan for this year  No detailed engineering has been done at present u Will request support from PPD ME department  Evaluate instrumentation u Temperature sensors u Heaters  Discuss with ORNL the possibilities for fab u Casting u Encapsulation s e-beam welding?  Progress will depend on resources u Manpower is very limited at this time s Fraction of Don Summers and myself s Help will be graciously accepted u M&S - <$20k
