5 Academic Expectations Novel should be brought to class each day. Reading Journal is a requirement. Reading should be done for homework each night. Annotate in reading journals each night (for Ruff Bucks at reading checkpoints). Quizzes will be given at reading checkpoints (can use notes, no book). Any words you do not know should be listed in journals with definitions (for Ruff Bucks). Vocab should be listed daily. Any/All Vocabulary from the book can be included on quizzes.

7 Things to think about as you are reading… The historical background – How is the social and political climate of the 1950s reflected in the novel? Ken Kesey – Is this just a story about mental institutions in the 1950s? What can you say about the author’s purpose? Literary Devices – Make sure you a practicing close reading every night. Watch and make note of possible metaphors, symbolism, allusions, or other literary devices. Creative Project – Think about your creative project. Make notes about specific scenes/quotes/concepts that you could incorporate into your assignment.

8 Creative Project Choose a Character, Create a Collage. Write a one-page description of your work clearly describing the connection between your character and at least one of the unit concepts. Description should show how you took other literary elements into account (such as theme, symbolism, setting, tone, etc.). View the projects in person or virtually (turnitin.com) and make thoughtful comments on at least two collages (other than your own). You will be given two class periods to work. Projects will be displayed in the modular. See rubric for details.
