With Ms. Jenkins

Hello! Welcome to Back To School Night! My name is Kelly Jenkins and I will be your child’s teacher for the 2015-2016 school year. I am a 2000 graduate of The College of New Jersey and a 2011 graduate of Grand Canyon University with a M.Ed in Curriculum: Reading and Instruction. I have a Standard Teaching Certificate in Pre-K through Grade 3, a Certificate of Eligibility in Teaching Reading, and I am Highly Qualified in both Reading and Math. This will be my 14 th year of teaching. Prior to joining CSS, I taught 2 nd Grade for 8 years and Pre-K for 5 years before that. I have twin brothers who are 14 and just began High School! I am excited to be your partner on this journey through First Grade!

I am from Canada. I have been living in Logan for over 14 years. I have 2 children in Logan Elementary School. I have been working as a classroom aide for 3 years.

Reporting absences is a basic responsibility of the parent/guardian of our students. Parents/Guardians are to call the school 467-5133 by 8:40 a.m. to report a student absent. Our “Global Connect” automated phone system will continue to be the first call you receive from our district if your child has been recorded absent by the classroom teacher and you have not called to report that absence. If you forget to call in your child’s absence and then you receive a Global Connect automated phone call, please listen to that message and immediately follow the prompts on the message. Calling the school after you receive the Global Connect message is a critical part of the attendance process and is your responsibility. Please call immediately so we can verify that your child is absent.

We “PAWS” to Be…. Safe Kind Respectful Responsible The BEST that we can be!

ClassDojo is a web based program which allows teachers to track students’ behaviors (positive AND negative) easily and efficiently. The program is based on points, and students can be given positive points for things like being on task, being respectful, participating, or working hard. On the other hand, points can be taken away if students are off task, talking out, or being unsafe. Parents are able to monitor their child’s progress throughout the day using the app or by connecting online. Note: if you have questions about points given or taken during the course of the day, please wait until the end of the day to email me.

ELA includes Phonics, Writing, Guided Reading, and Reader’s Workshop Writing Program is Being A Writer Guided Reading is small group, differentiated instruction. Reader’s Workshop: interact with the story through meta-cognition and group/partner discussions Phonics Program is Fountas & Pinnell.

Math is delivered in Math Workshop Format. Small Group & Differentiated Instruction Both ELA and Math incorporates “I Can” statements. I CAN Statements contain a list of all secure skills by quarter. I CAN Statements allow students to become responsible for their learning because they demonstrate what they can do. Teachers distribute I CAN Statements in the beginning of the year so parents are aware of the specific skills being focused on during the school year. ~Taken from the District’s website Instruction is student focused, data driven, and facilitated by the teacher and the Aide.

We, here at CSS, understand that birthdays are important to students and their families. If you would like to send in a treat for your child’s birthday, please send a note or email in advance to let me know which day is good for you. Please adhere to the District’s Wellness Policy- which can be found on the website under 'Health Office' and was sent home on the first day of school. As a rule of thumb, any treat that lists sugar as its first ingredient does not comply with the District’s Policy. Cupcakes will not be distributed to students. In Addition: Please keep in mind that distributing birthday party invitations at school is prohibited unless you are inviting all students. Also, I am prohibited from acting as a “go-between” for parents wishing to arrange play- dates. Thank you for understanding.
