2-year College Options: The Details for Transferring from 2-year to 4-year College College Exploration

Starting at Community College Community College is an excellent place to start, but you need to be smart about it… Before you get excited or go crazy and register for classes, you need to make sure that the classes you choose will transfer.

Two-Year Options Strategic Academic Advising—Look at the courses you are intending to take and make sure they are going to fit into your 4-year degree plan. www.tccns.org – the Texas website where all courses are listed, so you can make sure your courses are going to transfer. www.tccns.org

Benefits to 2-year college Tuition is lower… Period. 1 st —Statistics show that almost 60% of students change their majors. If you decide you want to change yours, that could cost you a bunch of $$$. - cheaper tuition will make that more acceptable. 2 nd —2-year colleges very often have smaller, more hands-on classes than large colleges do.

Course Equivalencies… Back to www.tccns.orgwww.tccns.org In Texas, we have the Common Course Numbering System. – so, if you’re careful, your courses can ALL transfer. Always check TCCNS.org before registering!!! Otherwise you might take classes that don’t count for anything!!! That would be time and money down the drain. Nobody wants that…

Potential Causes for Concern Not all schools take part in the Common Course Number System. Before you do anything, check with the advisor at the community college and with the admissions office at the university you want to attend. Universities that aren’t on the list include Trinity, Rice, and Southwestern. Just because they aren’t on the list doesn’t mean the courses won’t transfer!!! It just means you have to be more cautious and make smart moves!

Potential Causes for Concern Some postsecondary schools, such as medical and dental won’t accept your required courses if they are taken at a community college. Take your basic sciences at 4-year college. Basic sciences include Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, etc.
