2 Pembrokeshire Estates Engagement Project - PEEP PEEP is a partnership project involving 5 stakeholders; Outcome of a visit by the then Minister for the Disabled to the Port of Pembroke (June 2014) - he expressed a desire to ensure that SMEs in South Pembrokeshire had a mechanism for support for managing H&S risks; Principle aim: for the stakeholders to pool knowledge/ resources to provide free tailored health and safety information and advice to help businesses sensibly manage workplace risks.

3 Pembrokeshire Estates Engagement Project - PEEP The stakeholders achieved the principle aim by: -Seminar at PMH Headquarters on 17 th March 2015 for the SMEs contracted to the MHPA; -Business support visits to employers on Industrial Estates during June – July 2015; -Free training day (30/09/15) tailored to the key risks identified during the visits.

4 8 Industrial estates were targeted by an officer from HSE, PCC or Workboost Wales: –Withybush; –Snowdrop Lane; –Honeyborough; –West Llanion; –Brunel Quay; –Waterston; –Waterloo; –Thornton Why? The targeting of a large number of employers in a geographical area contributed to the best use of available resources. PEEP Support visits

5 Myth: H&S has banned stepladders PEEP Support visit They were not traditional inspection visits. Purpose of visit was to: Agree key risks that are most relevant to each business and identify where there are any knowledge gaps; Provide free information and guidance packs relevant to the work activity and signpost to further information. Dispel H&S myths;

6 Findings from support visits 123 support visits were carried out; Visits were positive with good engagement from employers; 1342 employees; Number of employees ranged from 1- 125 - average of 11; The majority of businesses fell into 4 broad categories: Manufacturing and Engineering Building/construction Light industry Retail 64% of businesses advised that they had access to health and safety support;

7 Findings from support visits The main hazards within the businesses were: Manual handling Slips and trips Use/maintenance of machinery Vehicles/transport Working at a height These are the main issues which are to be addressed today.

9 Stands in the Auditorium WORKBOOST WALES: Provide Confidential, Practical and Free Advice to SMEs in Wales. Subjects covered include: Workplace safety and health; Management of sickness absence; Return to work procedures. BUSINESS WALES: Provides business support to people starting, running and growing a business. Includes information, advice and guidance delivered online, over the phone through the Business Wales Helpline, and face to face. IOSH STAND: Will have information & application forms for IOSH membership. Also leaflets/booklets provided by IOSH HQ on general advise concerning workplace health and safety.

10 Stands in the Auditorium HSE STAND: Will be manned by Inspectors who will be available to answer any queries throughout the rest of the day. PROVIDENCE TRAINING: Specialist Health & Safety training company - offers a wide range of courses aimed at all sectors. Training can be carried out at the Centre in Neyland or at a clients premises anywhere in the UK. Offer a Health & Safety consultancy service. SIMON SAFETY: An independent distributor of personal protective equipment, safety equipment, work wear and janitorial supplies. Able to supply the majority of the main PPE brands. Approach is to work with customers in identifying where PPE needs to be selected as part of their risk assessment.

11 Stands in the Auditorium PCC OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & MANUAL HANDLING PCC are available to external companies for Occ. Health services including health surveillance and inanimate manual handling training. MID AND WEST WALES FIRE AUTHORITY: Can provide advice on general fire safety and guidance on your statutory responsibilities under the Regulatory Reform Order - a piece of legislation which applies to virtually any place.
