2 The Bill of Rights The first 10 Amendments are known as the “Bill of Rights” These Amendments were ratified in 1791.

3 “The Bill of Rights” Puts strict limits on how the government can use its power over the people.

4 “The First Amendment” Contains five basic Freedoms that are essential to the American way of life. (Religion, Speech, Press, Assembly, and freedom to Petition the government.)

5 The Freedom of Religion.

6 “The First Amendment” The Freedom of Speech.

7 “The First Amendment” The Freedom of the Press.

8 “The First Amendment” The Freedom of Assembly.

9 “The First Amendment” Freedom to Petition the Government. Freedom of Petition means that we have the Right to express our ideas to the Government.

10 Protecting Against Abuses of power.( 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th ) The 2 nd Amendment- guarantees Americans the right to serve in a state militia, and to bear arms.

11 Second Amendment Since we no longer need State militias some Americans question if individuals should have the right to have guns. State to state rules may differ on their laws.

12 “The 2 nd Amendment” “The right to bear Arms”

13 Third Amendment Limit’s the governments power to house soldiers in anyone’s home.

15 Fourth Amendment Protects people from unreasonable search and seizures. A law official cannot search your home without a search warrant. The warrant must be reasonable.

16 Fourth Amendment Judges do not give out warrant without probable cause. Without the 4 th you would have little feeling of security in your own home.

17 Fourth Amendment Search warrant,liberty in your home.

18 Protecting the Accused These Amendments help ensure that people accused of committing a crime and the rights of people brought to a court. Amendments 5-8

19 Fifth Amendment No one can be brought to trial without 1 st being indicted, or formally accused by a group of citizens called a grand jury. Prohibits double jeopardy- being tried twice for the same crime.

20 Fifth Amendment The Right to remain silent

21 Fifth Amendment Protects you from Eminent Domain- which is the government taking your land. ( They must pay you if they do.)

22 6 th Amendment Must be told of exact charges brought against you.

23 6 th Amendment Trial by jury, speedy public trial, impartial jury.

24 6 th Amendment Accused Individuals must have the right to question all witnesses against them. They must also be permitted to call witnesses

25 6 th Amendment Right to hear and question witnesses against you. Right to call witnesses on your behalf.

26 7 th Amendment Guarantees the right to a jury in a Civil Trial.

27 A civil case is where 2 sides disagree about something. No crime was committed but there was an accident due to neglect.

28 7 th Amendment A ladder breaks and you sue the manufacture of the ladder for injuries and pain and suffering.

29 8 th Amendment Prohibits excessive bail or fines, forbids cruel and unusual punishment.

30 The 8 th Amendment prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. Example- the electric chair.

31 Bail-money paid to the court by an accused person to make sure they appear for trial.

32 9 th Amendment Specifies the rights listed are not your only rights of the People. People

33 10 th Amendment Specifies the rights not specifically given to the National Government belongs to the States or the people.
