What is Geothermal Energy? Geothermal Energy is the heat found from inside of the Earth. The word “Geothermal” comes from the Greek Words ‘Geo’ (earth), and ‘therme’ (heat). Geothermal energy is heat from underground that is sucked to create energy. Just like drinking soda with a straw and sucking up the soda into your mouth.

Where does it come from?/ How was it formed? Geothermal Energy comes from the underground where hot rocks are and water is. If you dig down a little bit below the Earth’s surface you will see hot rocks and water.

EXAMPLES Volcanoes- rupture from the planet’s surface that makes hot magma come out from below the surface. Geysers- “to gush” –water eruption, and then becomes steam Hot Springs- found on earth’s crust

Renewable or Non-renewable? Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source.

Why is it Renewable? Because the heat is continuously produced inside the Earth. Deep inside the earth the water and rocks absorb the heat from the magma and we can dig wells and pump out the heated water or steam. This heated water can be used for heating and generating electricity.

How does it make Electrical Energy? Geothermal Energy turns Heat energy into Electrical energy by the movement of the steam which turns the turbines, that is directly connected to a electrical generator to generate electricity.

Geothermal Energy

4 Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy 1- Location- 1- Location- There are not many suitable places for the power plant, because the place has to have hot rocks and they have to be close for easy drilling. 2-Hazardous Materials- 2-Hazardous Materials- Bad gases and minerals can come up from underground with the steam, like mercury, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide.

4 Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy 3)Earthquakes- 3)Earthquakes- In many places, earthquakes can happen. 4) Pollution- 4) Pollution- Pollution can happen if the drilling is not done in the right way at the geothermal stations.

4 Advantages of Geothermal Energy This energy is clean & safe for the environment. Can be used to heat your homes. There is no need of any fossil fuels. Geothermal Energy Plants are not affected by different weather conditions.
