2 Vehicle Registration – Tags  Tag follow individual when: Selling vehicle Trading vehicle Transferring ownership of a vehicle  Turning in tags: When former owner leaves current and valid tag on vehicle. If new owner uses the vehicle for business.

3 Vehicle Registration – Tags Tag Remains with Vehicle: Vintage Vehicles. Act 96-746 Protects sellers of vintage vehicles if new owners intentionally delays changing registration of vehicle. Transfer of ownership from parent to child with special tags. Ex. Helping Schools, Collegiate, Personalized, etc… Transfer of ownership to a surviving spouse.

4 Changing Class of Vehicle  Example: Passenger car to mobile home.  Request tag transfer.  Turn in current tag.  Pay difference in registration fees.  Receive higher license plate class.

5 What To Bring When Registering A Vehicle  Title application  Bill of sale  All documents regarding vehicle  Check book, all major credit cards!!!

6 Tag Renewal  This is done yearly, based first letter of last name.  Example - Last names beginning with the letter “F” renews in April.  You must keep current year registration in vehicle.  With a new car, before you receive registration receipts, you will need one of the following: 1. Legible copy of Bill of Sale 2. Copy of application for certificate of title 3. Valid temporary registration receipt

7 Automobile Insurance  In Alabama liability insurance is required.  If you finance, must have full coverage.  Ask your provider if they offer discounts for safety features.  Be aware of rate changes! Make sure your coverage meets cost of living, vehicle and medical care increases.

8 Automobile Insurance Terms  Liability- Proof that you will be financially responsible if you cause damage to property or injure other people. (The two types are “Bodily Injury” and “Property Damage.” This type of insurance is the most important protection a driver can have (only covers you for the amount that you purchase).  Uninsured Motorists- Covers you if you are in a wreck with uninsured motorist. Doesn’t usually cover property damage.

9 Automobile Insurance Terms  Collision- covers damage to your vehicle even if it’s your fault. It normally has deductible.  Comprehensive- covers damage not caused by a vehicle. Examples are fire, theft, and hurricane.  Medical Payments- covers medical/funeral expense for you and passengers if injured or killed in any collision.
