3 Ensuring Food Safety for our People Journey Towards FFSA Project Title: Fiji – Improving Key Services to Agriculture  EU funded programme, implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC) and Secretariat of the Pacific Communities. Aim of the Project:  Improve key services to non-sugar agriculture areas. Improving and consolidating farming system in Fiji. Ultimate goal of income generation through alternative livelihoods for poverty alleviation.  Food Safety implementation in SMEs through SUSTAINABLE support of local intern Trainers/Counsellors (TcCs).

4 Ensuring Food Safety for our People Journey Towards FFSA Project Title: Fiji – Improving Key Services to Agriculture  9 selected Trainer Counsellors  10 selected Enterprises received in-depth theoretical and hands –on training on Good Agricultural Hygiene Practices (GAP, GHP), HACCP in compliance to Fiji Food Safety Regulation standards.  The selected Enterprises and TcCs worked into close collaboration with ITC International Food Safety Consultant in attaining international recognized certification based on HACCP and Codex Principles.  Thus, opening opportunities doors for export trade for enterprises and advisory and consultancy approach for trained food safety counsellors.

5 Safe Food Saves Life Feb 2013 – April 2014  Awareness on Hygiene and Food safety system based on HACCP in world trade  Road Map towards GAP Analysis  Understanding HACCP Determination  Principles & Methods of Training  Internal Audit Verification  HACCP / ISO 22000 40 Lead Auditors completed international qualification certification - 8 x trainer counsellors & 32 x enterprise & regulatory bodies trainers now in high demand.

6 Ensuring Food Safety for our People Journey Towards FFSA – HACCP Implementation Outcome Improvements Processing areas are enclosed which have resulted into effective implementation of  Good Manufacturing practices  Proper segregation of processing areas  Zoning controls people movement

7 Ensuring Food Safety for our People Journey Towards FFSA – HACCP Implementation Outcome Implementation of Prerequisite Programs Supplier Control System Purchasing Raw Materials from Trained Approved Suppliers.

8 Ensuring Food Safety for our People Journey Towards FFSA – HACCP Implementation Outcome Employees wear proper uniform and hairnet prior entering the processing area. Different processing areas has different colour coded uniforms. Example: Blue uniform for washing & sorting crops White uniforms is worn inside processing plant.

9 Ensuring Food Safety for our People Journey Towards FFSA – HACCP Implementation Outcome Implementation of Operational Prerequisite Programs Before – Filtration cloth was not boiled. After – Filtration cloth are boiled at 100°C prior use.

13 Ensuring Food Safety for our People Legal Framework of FFSA The Fiji Food Safety Association (FFSA) is a voluntary non-profit organization reg istered on 22 nd May 2015. The role of FFSA is governed by -Legal framework of Fiji Food Safety Act 2003 - Food Safety Regulation 2009 (MOH) The core objective of FFSA is to provide professional services in the fields of  Product safety, quality assurance  All forms of value addition including planning management of safety and quality infrastructure.

16 Ensuring Food Safety for our People Core Objective – FFSA FFSA is a hub for sharing ideas, viewpoints  Best practice due to the diverse experiences of members acquired through quality management  Consultancy, research  Training provider in the general quality infrastructure, food safety, agriculture, agri business, SME development, value addition, and operational capacity building. Pool of professionals from food processing companies, retailers, caterers, environme ntal health officers, consultants, research organizations, academic institutions and students.

19 Conclusion Today’s workshop marks a milestone in ensuring compliance to Food Safety rules and standards in Fiji, as FFSA provides a platform for people and institutions to share ideas, best practice and to disc uss and address issues related to food safety that benefits everyone. We acknowledge the tremendous support and cooperation provided by EU and ITC, Ministry of Health, and key stakeholders who have contributed to the formation of FFSA.
