1 Major Art Modality Utilized: Visual Art Multiple Intelligences Addressed: Visual/Spatial, Logical/Mathematical, Naturalist, and Musical Lesson Abstract: Students will create imaginative compositions using leaf rubbings as a starting point. Students will talk about their creation to their classmates. Students will listen to and see the story book The Leaf Man by Lois Elhert. Students will sing and use motions to the song ‘Red Leaves Falling Down’ by Pamela Sunshine (see resources) Materials Needed: Assorted leaves, crayons without paper wrapping, drawing paper Procedures Students will talk about fall and what happens to the leaves in the fall. Students will move and sing to the song “Red Leaves Falling Down” by Pamela Sunshine. The teacher will read the book “The Leaf Man” by Lois Elhert. Students will discuss what they see and hear. The teacher will tell the students that they will create their own leaf creature. First, they will go outside and collect their own leaves or the teacher will already have a collection of leaves to pass out to the students. The teacher will discuss the shapes of the leaves. Students will name shapes (triangles, rectangles, and circles) which students see in the shapes of the leaves. Then they are to use their imagination to see a creature in the shape of the leaves. Together, the class creates a “T-chart” to differentiate between geometric and organic shapes. Students will use the side of a paperless crayon to make some leaf rubbings. They may use both sides of the paper. When they create a rubbing they like, they will create a leaf creature out of it. Using craft items like google eyes, give it eyes, a nose, a mouth, and any other details that it needs. They may name the creature and tell their neighbor or take turns telling the whole class about their leaf creature. Standards Addressed in this Lesson: M1G1. Students will study and create various two and three-dimensional figures and identify basic figures (squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles) within them. c. Create pictures and designs using shapes, including overlapping shapes. D1F.4 Understands and applies music concepts to dance c. Executes accuracy in stopping, starting, and changing in response to music and sound. D1CR.2 Demonstrates an understanding of dance as a way to communicate meaning c. Moves expressively to music and/or other accompaniment (e.g., sound, text). Standards Addressed in this Lesson: M1G1.
