Latitude/ Longitude

What is the latitude/longitude

Finding Locations on Earth  Latitude- distance north or south parallel from the equator (degrees)  Run east and west  Longitude- angular distance east or west from the prime meridian (degrees)  Run north and south

Units 1) Degrees, minutes, seconds I. Degree= =contains 60 parts (minute ) II. Minute= = 1.58km

latitude  How far north or south the position is along the line of latitude in relation to the equator  Globe- spherical- 360 degrees  Distance from equator to north or south pole is ¼

longitude

Distance between the Meridian  Are all distances the same?

Great circles  What are they?  Navigation device splits the glob up by circumference. It is the shortest distance of travel from point A to point B (like a hypotenuse of a triangle, however the globe is 3d)

Finding direction  Devices?  Explain

Magnetic declination  Magnetic declination- declination (measured in degrees) east or west of the northpole  direction in which a needle of a compass points

Magnetic declination

Making Maps  How do you propose scientists make accurate images of a 3d object 2d?

 Cartography- science of making maps  Scientist- cartographer

Remote sensing  Uses satellites or air planes to gather data about the earth surface which is then used to create images  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J17Q gc4a8xY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J17Q gc4a8xY

Map projections  - flat map representation of the 3 dimensional surface of the earth  Cylindrical, azimuthal, conic

Cylindrical  Imagine wrapping a piece of graph paper around the world, tracing the oceans, continents, great rivers, parallels and meridians.  What problems could arise?

Cylindrical  Meridians are straight  Parallels have an equal amount of space in between them

 Thoughts on cylindrical maps?

Cylindrical maps  ARE NOT ACCURATE  The meridians come together at the poles  This distorts continents close to the poles  Look at the maps again at look at Russia or Antarctica or Africa

Azimuthal Projections  Consider placing a piece of paper on top of the globe, so that it touches the earth at one point.  What would the lines of longitude and latitude look like?  What would the continents look like?
