2 Overview of this Session provide an introduction to NIH-sponsored grant mechanisms for training and career development review eligibility requirements with the goal of helping you and/or your investigator apply for the appropriate award

3 National Research Service Awards (NRSA) named after Dr. Ruth L. Kirschstein, the first woman director of an NIH Institute, as well as a champion and strong advocate for research training provide support for individual (Fs) and institutional (Ts) research training programs associated Appointment and Termination Forms and Payback Agreement

4 Individual Fellowships (Fs) Purpose:  provide support for promising doctoral candidates who will perform dissertation research and training in scientific health- related fields and postdoctoral associates Eligibility Requirements:  U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident (at time of award)  designated sponsor  some ICs require that the sponsor have active funding from the respective IC  underrepresented minority (for diversity fellowships only)

5 Institutional Fellowships (Fs) cont. Application Deadlines:  diversity fellowships  April 13 th  August 13 th  December 13 th  all other fellowships  April 8 th  August 8 th  December 8 th  refer to specific IC to determine if applications are accepted for all three dates

6 PREDOCTORAL – 5 Years F30 (PA-11-110) dual degreeNCI, NIA, NIAAA, NIDCD, NIDCR, NIDDK, NIDA, NIEHS, NIMH F31 (PA-11-111) traditional NCI, NIA, NIAAA, NIDCD, NIDCR, NIDA, NIMH, NINDS, NCCAM * F31 (PA-11-112) to promote diversity in health-related research all ICs support F Grant Mechanisms *only until May, 2012

POSTDOCTORAL – 3 Years F32 (PA-11-113) traditionalNHLBI, NCI, NEI, NHGRI, NIA, NIAAA, NIAID, NIAMS, NIBIB, NICHD, NIDCD, NIDCR, NIDDK, NIDA, NIEHS, NIGMS, NIMH, NINDS, NINR, NCCAM F33 (PA-11-114) senior fellowship; change in field of research NHLBI, NCI, NHGRI, NIA, NIAAA, NIAID, NIAMS, NIDCR, NIEHS, NIGMS, NINDS, NINR

8 Institutional Training Grants (Ts) Purpose:  to develop and enhance research training (pre- and post- doctoral) through a coordinated programmatic approach  trainees are appointed by the awarded institution and are paired with a faculty mentor Application Deadlines:  January 25 th  May 25 th  September 25 th  refer to specific IC to determine if applications are accepted for all three dates

9 Institutional Training Grants (Ts) cont. Eligibility:  Institution - domestic, non profit public or private institution; strong research program and infrastructure in proposed area; competitive applicant pool for potential trainees  Program Director - strong leadership skills; recognized researcher in proposed area; active NIH-sponsored research; history of mentoring and training  Faculty Mentors – active NIH-sponsored research; history of mentoring and training  Trainees - U.S. citizen or permanent resident (at time of appointment); program specific requirements

10 T Grant Mechanisms PRE-AND POST-DOCTORAL T32 (PA 11-184) traditional12 month appointments for a maximum of 5 years of support for predoctoral training 12 month appointments for a maximum of 3 years of support for postdoctoral training T35 (PA-11-185) short-term training 2-3 months support for research training

11 Career Development Awards (Ks) Purpose:  provide “protected time” for research training opportunities to further develop career, beginning at the postdoctoral level Eligibility:  US Citizen of permanent resident (at time of award)  except for K99-R00 award  must be able to meet full time appointment requirement of 9 calendar months  mentored awards - can not be former PI of R01, P01 subproject, or any K award  can be former PI of R03 or R21 for most mechanisms, but not all  independent awards - must have active peer-reviewed research support at time of award  each IC uses grant mechanisms differently Application Deadlines:  February 12th  June 12 th  October 12 th  refer to specific IC to determine if applications are accepted for all three dates

12 K Grant Mechanisms MENTORED – 3-5 Years K01 (PA-11-190) research scientist developmentall purpose K08 (PA-11-193) clinical research scientist development clinical research; requires less research experience than K01 K22transition to independencebasic scientists K23 (PA-11-194) patient oriented-research development physician scientists K12institutional clinical research scientist development clinical research

13 K Grant Mechanisms cont. INDEPENDENT – 3-5 Years K02 (PA 11-192) independent scientist awardnewly independent scientists K24 (PA-11-195) mid-career investigator award in patient-oriented research associate professor level or the equivalent

14 K Grant Mechanisms cont. MENTORED & INDEPENDENT K99-R00 (PA-11-197) pathway to independence award mentoring and independent phase; no more than 5 years of postdoctoral research support at time of application; can not be former PI of any NIH grant mechanism
