Chapter 4 Fractions, Decimals, and Percent.

Day 1

Vocabulary an equation that’s shows two ratios are equivalent. a number that represents part of a whole or part of a set. Percent - Proportion - Rational Number - Fraction - Decimal- Number Line - a representation of a real number using the base ten and decimal notation. a ratio that compares a number to 100. any number that can be written as a fraction. a line on which numbers are marked at intervals, used to illustrate simple numerical operations. Deposit-an amount added to an account or place. Discount- an amount subtracted from the original price. Ratio- Taxes- Tips- a comparison of two or more numbers. an amount of money added to a total bill. an amount of money given to a service provided as gratitude.

I Can…. Model with percentages.

Modeling Percentages Essential Understanding: You can use models to help solve problems involving percentages. Below is a list of the most common models used. Pie Charts- Pie charts are the most commonly used model when working with percentages. They are created much like a fraction model. Each section is drawn to represent a percentage. For instance 25% would encompass ¼ of the chart, because 25% is equivalent to ¼. Example: 10 by 10 Grids- 100 charts can be used to illustrate and compare percentages, just like decimals. This is true because a percentage is a ratio comparing a part to 100. Example: Function Table- Function tables can be used to determine the whole when given the part and the percentage, or the whole when given the part and percentage. These tables are used to increase or decrease the ratio by scaling. Example: - Determining the percent of a number - Determining the whole when given the part Double Number Line – A double number line can be used to determine the percent of a number or determine the part when given the whole. Examples: - Determining the percent of a number - Determining the whole when given the part

Bell Work True or False? 1.85% of 60 is 51 2.23% is greater than 0.25 3.If 30% of 40 is 12, then 70% of 40 is 28. 4.If 10% of 80 is 8, the 250% is 300. You must use models to justify your response.

I Can…. Calculate tax, tips, and discounts.

Tax, Tips, and Discounts Essential Understanding: Taxes and Tips- are an amount of money added to a total bill. - To determine the amount owed for taxes or tips, think “what is _____% of the total?” Example: - To determine the final cost, add the determined amount to the subtotal. Example: Discounts and sales- are an amount of money deducted from the original cost. -To determine the amount of deduction think, “what is _____% of the original cost?” Example: -To determine the sale price, subtract the deduction from the original cost. Example:

Bell Work David is taking his girlfriend out to dinner and a movie. First, they have dinner at The Taco Place. At the restaurant, David receives a bill for $43.00 including tax, but he knows it is polite to leave a 15% tip for his waiter. Next, they go to the Roxy. Movie tickets cost $7 per person, plus 10% for taxes. If David only had $70.00 for the entire date, can he afford to buy a $6.00 tub of popcorn.

I Can…. Solve story problems involving percentages.

Story Problems Essential Understanding: There are several things to keep in mind when solving problems involving percentages. Such as: Does the question ask how many or what percent? If the question ask what percent, do you have enough information to make a fraction? Example: Ben made 18 out of 24 free throws during last night’s game. What percent of free throws did he make? If the question ask how many, the percent will be given and your answer will be an amount. Example: 60% of students love math class. If there are 90 students, how many like math class? Does the question ask “how many are not? or “what percent does not?” Examples: 15% of voters are in favor of building a new bypass. How many are not in favor of a new bypass? 73% of college students admit to be home sick. What percent of students do not feel homesick?
