Teaching a Technology- Enriched Science Investigation Unit Measuring Temperature and Dissolved Oxygen iLearn Science Session 5

Focusing Questions How can I measure temperature with a probe? What is dissolved oxygen and why is it an important element in our ecosystem? How does temperature affect the amount of dissolved oxygen in our water? How can I measure dissolved oxygen in the environment?

Instruction

Framing the Session Today we are going to conduct a short inquiry experiment using the probes to look at the impact of temperature on dissolved oxygen in a water solution. Note: The temperature probe is a simple probe. However, dissolved oxygen probes must be calibrated. They are more complex and must be set ahead of time when using with students..

Teaching What is dissolved oxygen? Where can we find dissolved oxygen in our environment? Why is it important?

Connecting the Temperature Probe Temperature Probe: How do we use the temperature probe? Connect the temperature probe Connect the temperature probe to the I/O- 1 port. Set up the data logger and take measurements.

Calibrating the Oxygen Probe Oxygen/Dissolved Oxygen Probe: Connect the oxygen/dissolved oxygen probe to the I/O- 2 port. Calibrate the oxygen/dissolved oxygen probeCalibrate the oxygen/dissolved oxygen probe. Set up the data logger to take measurements of the hot and cold solution.

Work Time

Getting Started Today we are going to collect data on the impact of temperature on dissolved oxygen in water. We will do this by collecting data on the temperature and the dissolved oxygen levels in cold water. Then we will add hot water and take the temperature and the dissolved oxygen level readings again.

Work Time Use lab worksheet that was distributed to answer:lab worksheet >Problem/question >Hypothesis >Materials >Procedure >Observations/data >Conclusion

Share

What are your final conclusions about the effects of temperature on dissolved oxygen? What other experiments can students conduct using either the temperature or dissolved oxygen probe? Share
