DAILY QUESTION November 20, 2008 1. What is an indicator?

Agenda11/20/08 Daily Question Ch 8 Section 1 Notes Assignments: 1. No assignment for tonight

Acids Sour, piercing taste Lemon and limes – Citric Acid Dill Pickles – Acetic Acid Apples – Malic Acid Grapes – Tartaric Acid

Acids When acids dissolve in water, they ionize. They form ions: Hydrogen ions (H + ) join Water (H 2 0) to form Hydronium ions (H 3 O + ) Hydronium ions give acids their sour taste!

Indicators Respond to the concentration of hydronium ions in water by changing color Blue litmus paper – acids turn it red

Strong Acids Ionize completely when dissolved in water Easily conduct electricity (strong electrolytes) Examples: Nitric acid, sulfuric acid

Weak Acids Equilibrium is reached; do not ionize completely when dissolved in water Do not conduct electricity well (weak electrolytes) Examples: Acetic acid

Bases Bitter, soapy taste Feel slippery Some bases have hydroxide ions (OH-) Some bases react with water to form hydroxide ions (OH-).

Bases Turn Red lithmus paper blue

Strong Bases Ionic compounds that contain a metal ion and a hydroxide ion (OH-). –Metal hydroxides – dissociate, or separate, when dissolved in water
