2: Sent by the Spirit 3:After Pentecost

 Origin of all things – including God’s plan for humanity  Father, Son, & Holy Spirit – distinct from one another yet perfectly united.  What did St. Patrick use to help explain the principle of the Holy Trinity? What else could we use?

 Third person of Holy Trinity  Participates fully in the work of God and Jesus  Was with Jesus at all times from conception on  Appeared in the form of a dove at Jesus’ baptism by his cousin John  Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to His Apostles after he was gone so they would have a teacher, advocate, and consoler

 On the feast of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon Mary and the Apostles in wind and flame in order to:  Remove all their fear; and  Send them out to proclaim the message of Christ and begin the spread of the gospel to all nations

 Pentecost is the birthday of the Church with the Holy Spirit empowering the Apostles to begin their work of building the Church  St. Irenaeus tells us: “Where the Church is, there also is God’s Spirit; where God’s Spirit is, there is the Church”  Therefore, it was believed from the earliest days that the Holy Spirit and the Church are inseparable

 The gifts of the Holy Spirit are: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel (Right Judgment), Fortitude (Courage), Knowledge, Piety (Reverence), and Fear of the Lord (Wonder and Awe in God’s Presence. (7)  Fruits of the Holy Spirit: Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Generosity, Gentleness, Faithfulness, Modesty, Self- Control, and Chastity (12)

 Nothing would be the same  The Holy Spirit revealed the Church at Pentecost, coming upon the Apostles and the disciples with a transforming fire, forming them into a visible community, and empowering them to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus  The Apostles and disciples were in public proclaiming that Jesus was the Messiah and Savior they had been waiting for

 Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Apostles began to live out what Jesus asked of them:  “Go, therefore, and made disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” MT 28:19- 20

 How did the ordinary followers who were not Apostles live?  According to Acts 2:42-47, they devoted themselves to the teachings of the Apostles, to communal life, to the breaking of the bread, and to prayer. Everyone who believed was together and shared all things in common. They met in the temple area and broke bread in their homes.

 Remember, these first followers were Jewish, so they continued to live as Jews with a life centered on the Temple  However, they were living this life in a different way – the way of Jesus  Therefore, these early followers became known as followers of the Way  The word “christian” emerged as the Church spread to the gentiles based on the Greek for Messiah – christos. It was first used in Antioch
