ORDER OF OPERATIONS Day 2 – The Rest!

ORDER OF OPERATIONS Do the problem 8 + 4 x 2 What answers did you come up with? Which one is correct and why? Try (-9 + 7) x 9 + 3

ORDER OF OPERATIONS In mathematics, there is a special order that you must follow when doing a problem with many operations. Grouping symbols Exponents Multiplication/Division Addition/Subtraction

EXPONENTS What does 5² mean? 5 · 5 which equals 25 The exponent means to write down that many of the “5’s” and then multiply them together So, what does 5³?

MORE EXPONENTS If you had 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 x 6, how could you rewrite the problem using exponents? This is called exponential notation Rewrite: 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 Rewrite: 2.6 x 2.6 x 2.6 x 2.6

Addition/Subtraction and Multiplication/Division If you ever have a problem in which only addition and subtraction remain to do, you must work from left to right. The same goes for multiplication and division. In other words, don’t think that Addition is always done before Subtraction or that Multiplication is always done before Division.

Examples 12 – 6 x 2 = 18(24 + 36) = 64 - (-5) + 37 x 2 = 16+4 5 3 2 x 2 – (-8 – 4) 2 =
