4 BEDE’S SYSTEM OF FINGER-COUNTING
Created in 1724, this system allows you to count to 9000 with your fingers. According to Bede, counting with fingers was used as far back as 4000 years ago.

5 Juan Pablo de Bonet (c. 1573-1633)
A Spanish Priest, Language Scholar, Soldier and Secretary in the Spanish Army, de Bonet was a pioneer in educating deaf people and published the first book on deaf education in 1620 Madrid.

6 ABBE CHARLES MICHEL DEL L’EPEE (24 Nov 1712-23 Dec 1789)
Philanthropic Educator in 18th Century France. Born to wealth in Versailles, studied to be a priest, but denied after refusing to denounce Jansenism. Studied law, passed the bar and then finally ordained, but denied a license to officiate. Established the first FREE public school for the deaf in 1771, attracting deaf children from all across France.

7 GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY Founded in 1865, Gallaudet University’s charter was signed by President Lincoln. Named after Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a noted figure and activist for the advancement of deaf education.

8 Laura Bridgman Born: Dec 21, 1829 Died: May 24, 1889 Bridgman was the FIRST deaf-blind person ever to be educated. (Perkins School For the Blind)

10 Alexander Graham Bell Bell was a proponent of the Oralism Method (the system of teaching deaf people to communicate by the use of speech and lip-reading rather than sign language) He insisted deaf students could and should learn to communicate by learning to speak and ONLY using speech to communicate.

11 Dr. William Stokoe Stokoe proved ASL was a language with its own syntax and grammar. Ex. English: What is your name? ASL: Your name, what is it?

12 Total Communication Method
Total Communication (TC) is an approach to Deaf education, that aims to make use of a number of modes of communication such as signed, oral, auditory, written and visual aids, depending on the particular needs and abilities of the child.
