4 Brave New World  Huxley projected his utopia/dystopia 600 years in the future- 26 th century (published in 1932). Warns the readers of the dangers of science when it is misused  BNW citizens’ motto: “Community, Identity, Stability.” Their lives are completely controlled by world government.

5 Continued…  Test-tube babies/unknown parents  Levels of society responsible for different functions  Subliminal messages  “Happiness drug”- Soma (eliminates unhappiness)

6 Scientific methods of control  Genetic engineering  Conditioning- young children are given powerful messages that make them think and feel certain ways  Soma- drug taken to produce happiness

9 Prepare for a socratic discussion…  Tomorrow we will have a round table discussion which will count as a grade. You must participate to get any points. You must prepare for all three questions.

10 Question 1 o 1. What issues in our world would need to be addressed/eliminated for a utopia to take place? o For an individual, what would need to be dealt with/overcome to participate in a utopia? o For a group/government/nation, what would need to be dealt with/overcome?

11 Question 2  What did Thomas Malthus believe about population? Do you agree or not and why? What are the dangers of overpopulation? How are we, as humans, prolonging natural death and aging? What are your feelings on this?

12 Question 3  What did Ivan Pavlov believe about classical conditioning? How are we conditioned? Is this good or bad? What are some examples of conditioning that you are aware of?
