2  In nowadays, most of the people have a job, because is necessary for live. We have to pay education, health, etc.  In this society found a job is fundamental, however, first that all we have to choose in what job we want to work. Fortunately in Chile exist a big variety of jobs, and one of them is the law.  A lawyer is a person who defends and/or accuses people against criminal charges.

3  A lawyer is a professional who is qualified to offer advice about the law or represent someone in legal matters. A lawyer can handle all sorts of legal matters from drafting wills to patent claims to defending people against criminal charges. Qualified lawyers have to attend law school and pass a bar exam in order to practice law.

4  The subjects in the “Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso” are in general:  -Law history  -Public law  -Private law  -Procedural civil law  -International law  -Professional ethics

5  You can study law in Chile or in another country, but in all the countries you have to study it in a university.  Once that you are graduate of lawyer in a university, you can work in the National Congress, the Public Ministry, universities, companies, law firms, notaries, in the armed forces, and in many others places (depending in what you are specialized).

6  Pros  -You may spend months in intellectual sparring with your opponents. For people who enjoy strategy, confrontation and the drama of a good battle, practicing law can be very fulfilling. - Professions in law are established and respected - Good salary (in some cases) - variety. You can be a lawyer, but you can specialize in different areas  Cons - Losing cases. If you feel someone is innocent, and they’re convicted, it totally destroys you. -Jobs in law are very competitive, especially at higher levels.  - Lawyers who work with criminals and other unpredictable people are sometimes the recipients of threats or violence.

8  Some of the lawyer duties are:  -Advise clients concerning business transactions, claim liability, advisability of prosecuting or defending lawsuits, or legal rights and obligations.  -Evaluate findings and develop strategies and arguments in preparation for presentation of cases.  -Gather evidence to formulate defense or to initiate legal actions, by such means as interviewing clients and witnesses to ascertain the facts of a case.

9  -Present evidence to defend clients or prosecute defendants in criminal or civil litigation.  -Interpret laws, rulings and regulations for individuals and businesses.  -Examine legal data to determine advisability of defending or prosecuting lawsuit.  -Study Constitution, statutes, decisions, regulations to determine ramifications for cases.  -Prepare legal briefs and opinions, and file appeals to the courts of appeal.

10 Reading Comprehension -- Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. Writing -- Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience. Critical Thinking -- Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Active Listening -- Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Persuasion -- Persuading others to change their minds or behavior. Negotiation -- Bringing others together and trying to reconcile differences.

11 Speaking -- Talking to others to convey information effectively. Active Learning -- Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making. Complex Problem Solving -- Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. Social Perceptiveness -- Being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do. Learning Strategies -- Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things.

12  The salary of the lawyers is different depending with who or in what firm is working.  For example, here in Chile a lawyer (recently graduated) earn $1 million, but if he works in a good firm he can earn $1,7 million.  However with the time the salary increase and a normal lawyer with four years of experience can earn $1,5 million, but a lawyer in a good firm whit the same four years of experience can earn more than $3 million.  A normal lawyer with ten years of experience earn $2,8 million, and a lawyer in a good firm with ten years of experience too can earn $6 million and more.

13  In conclusion a lawyer is a person who defends and/or accuses people against criminal charges. Here in Chile this race can be studied in the universities, a lawyer have a lot of responsibilities and duties, is not an easy work, you have to read to many books and memorize to rules, also a lawyer have to be smart and have abilities of negotiation and persuasion.  Is not a race for people who don`t like read, the salary depend for who you are working for, and the best salaries are just for the bests lawyers.
