Question 1 The Long Game Our opening title sequence is very typical to the Thriller Genre. Indeed, the narrative involves the murder of female victim; the main character is a young ordinary man who gets into an unusual situation because of his mental state; the story takes place in the remote areas of te city; the colours are desaturated; and it is a low key lighting. All those elements create a dark atmosphere and make the spectator thrill.

Frame 1 – The title of the film “The long Game”. We have chosen this title because our narrative involves gamble games. Indeed, our main character's father was a gambler and it affected George's mentality. Here, the long game represents the all the murders one by one committed by the villain, like a game. His father is associated with the King of clubs. The victims are related to specific cards as well. One of them is a girl, obsessing George, she is linked with the Queen of Hearts.

Frame 2 – Setting/Location The story of our film takes place in Brighton. In the first part of the opening title sequence, the character is in the ordinary, lively and busy areas of Brighton (Bus stop in London Road and Preston Park). We have chosen this location to show that George has a normal life (typical to the Thriller Genre), surrounded by lots of people that actually don’t see him nor see what is happening in his life. Then, for the flashbacks, the setting is much darker. It is set in the woods in Hollingbury. Those scenes are the flashbacks of a murder, the one that George committed. We can see him walking through the woods, the victim running before she died, and some shots of the dead body on the cold ground of the forest. It is near the city but in a remote and isolated area of it, which is conventional. Indeed, it is one of the main elements that needs to be in a Thriller film: a far removed place.

Frame 3 – Props & Costume For the costume, we decided to stay quite simple to show the normality of our main character. George is an ordinary guy, he then wears classical black jeans and coat (black connoting negativity, and here, it reflects the dark side of his personality) and some sneakers. About the props, the cards are major. In our opening title sequence, they reveal the narrative slightly but without telling everything. That is important in thrillers: giving just a few clues to the spectator to make him/her question and by keeping all the mysteries about it. It creates suspense.

Frame 4 – Camerawork & Editing For the bits where George is at the bus stop and in the park, we used wide and long shots, some panning shots and Point Of View shots. Here, the camerawork is quite simple to introduce George, to show his ordinary life. Then, with the flashbacks, we used close ups to hint only partly the dead body. It is the opening, so we needed to keep it vague and unclear. We also used longshots, but this time to show the murder scene from far and keep it mysterious. In the editing, we added some fades to white flashes to mark the difference between the present time and the memories about the murder that took place earlier in the past. We made some overlaid shots to make the image imprecise and to reflect his stable and double mental state.

Frame 5 – Title Font & Style For the font of our main title “The long Game”, we have chosen “Blacklist”. It is a simple but thick, sharp style and the letters are like broken or split down the middle to illustrate his state of mind: he is unstable and has a double personality. For the rest of the titles, we used a font called “Coluna Rounded”. It is a simple, all in capital letters font, which fits perfectly for the opening of a thriller film.

Frame 6 – The story and how the OTS sets it up Our opening title sequence sets up te story by introducing the main character and his problems. He is an ordinary guy,a loner and has an obsession about card games. This is the enigma in the centre of the whole movie and the spectator starts questionning about it as soon as the film begins. Indeed, George stares at certain cards (the queen of hearts and the king of clubs) and they are related to the murder scene in the flashbacks. It gives some information to the audience ut by keeping all the suspense and mystery.

Frame 7 – The Genre and how the OTS suggests it This is in the OTS that the audience knows what kind of the film they are watching. The conventions of the Thriller Genre are low key lighting, desaturated image (colours), remote places, dark costume. This medium shot of George walking alone in the woods shows all those elements typical to this Genre.

Frame 8 – how the characters are introduced The audience discovers the main character, George, in a long shot at the bus stop. His costume and performance allow to think that he is a serious, lonely and sad guy. The fact that he takes the bus suggests that he is a simple/ordinary man. We cannot see him clearly, which keeps the mystery about him and it is typical in thriller films.

Frame 9 – Special effects Our film doesn't have many special effects, as we wanted to make it look realistic. One of the important effects we used was the fade to white and the overlay effects for the flashbacks. It is employed to mark the transition and difference between the present and the past (the memories of the murder scene).
